Vodice from SW

The town of Vodice lies on the Adriatic coast of Croatia, six miles NW of Sibenik and just over a mile E of Tribunj. Originally a small fishing village, the town has expanded with the construction of several large hotels and an ACI yacht marina and is now one of the busiest resorts along the central Adriatic coast.

Yachts have the option either of the berthing in the town’s small harbour, where there are few facilities, or in the 290-berth Marina Vodice immediately NE of the town harbour.

Weather

Diurnal winds along the coast are mostly moderate during the summer months, predominantly from NW and rarely exceeding force 4/5. At night, katabatic winds off the mountains are a feature of some of the harbours along the NE Adriatic coast. During early spring and (especially) autumn conditions can be more unsettled, occasionally accompanied by violent thunderstorms - luckily of short duration - with winds of 30-35 knots or more and vicious, steep seas. In the winter the sudden, violent N wind off the mountains, the bora, is much to be feared, especially along the Velebitski channel. It tends to blow less strongly S of Zadar.

Equally prevalent in winter - although not uncommon in summer - is the scirocco, a S/SE wind that blows up from North Africa, usually in advance of a depression moving E across the Mediterranean. Unlike the bora, the scirocco only occasionally exceeds gale force, but is still a phenomenon to be wary of, especially if on a lee coast.

Navigation

Approach from N and W should be made between the islands of Logorun and Tijat immediately S of Tribunj. There are no dangers in the approach from S. However, note that there is a rocky shoal patch 200 metres SE of the entrance to the marina. The shoal is marked with an unlit starboard hand beacon. Once close in, the town is easily identified by a large hotel on the peninsula to the S and a conspicuous white war memorial at the root of the town harbour breakwater. The harbour is entered from SSE. Turn to port for the small town harbour, which is round a short breakwater at the SW end of the town, or to starboard for the ACI marina, which is located inside the long eastern breakwater.

Tourism

The old town of Tribunj

The town of Vodice has few attractions other than some very attractive beaches in the vicinity. The town was fortified against Turkish incursions in the 17the century, but today only one tower of the original walls remains. The walk along the coast to the old town of Tribunj, built on an island connected to the mainland via a narrow causeway, is very pleasant. There are some good restaurants along the waterfront in Tribunj at the end of the walk.
