Yalta

Yalta (Ukrainian and Russian: Я́лта, Crimean Tatar: Yalta) is a resort city in Crimea, southern Ukraine, on the north coast of the Black Sea. The city is located on the site of an ancient Greek colony, said to have been founded by Greek sailors who were looking for a safe shore (γιαλός – yalos in Greek) on which to land. It is situated on a deep bay facing south towards the Black Sea, surrounded by wooded mountains. It has a warm humid subtropical climate with many vineyards and orchards in the vicinity.

Yalta is where the controversial Yalta Conference between US President Franklin D. Roosevelt, UK Prime Minister Winston Churchill, and SSSR General Secretary Joseph Stalin was held on February 4–11, 1945 during World War II.

As the Crimea’s most important Black Sea resort, the port is a magnet for cruise ships and superyachts of all types and is a hive of activity.

The approach to Yalta is straight forward. The breakwater, with a large light, is very visible.

On approach call Yalta Port Control on VHF channel 14 and ask permission to enter the harbour. You will not be allowed to enter if you do not have an agent appointed. Yachts must also report to the Coastguard (Lebed).

Entrance

Yalta is a port of entry to Ukraine.

Formalities are lengthy and you will be told that they must be performed by an agent, not you. It is recommended to appoint an agent in advance of your arrival. Yachts should report first dock to the customs pier and complete clearance formalities. You will not be allowed to leave the yacht until the agent has completed all the clearances.

This process must be carried out every time you arrive at, or depart from, a port, leave a berth or move from anchorage.

The above still stands for visiting foreign yachts entering Ukraine via Crimea. However, if you have booked in already (in Odessa for example) and have stamped paperwork for an approved cruise, you may freely sail in and out of the locations given on the paperwork. You can then dispense with agents and authorities until you come to book out of the country. Just ensure you do not go out of the 12Nm cruising limit.

Berthing

The harbor is exposed to the southerlies and, when they blow, can be dangerous to a yacht. In that case it is recommended to move, after obtaining permission, to commercial harbour of Massandra.

After clearing with the authorities you can move from the customs pier to the main Passenger Port. Yachts should med-moor with their own anchor on the NW quay.

This harbour is reported to be crowded, with no security or services, noisy and expensive.
