Andora Marina

Andora is a popular holiday resort on the Ligurian coast 25 miles E of San Remo. The town is situated on the banks of the River Merula immediately W of Capo Mele. Andora’s beach is one of the finest along this stretch of the Italian Riviera and attracts thousands of mostly Italian tourists during the peak summer months. Just E of the town is a large modern marina (see link below for details) with over 800 berths, including 56 for yachts in transit.

The prevailing winds along the western part of the Ligurian coast during the summer are a SW or SE seabreeze, which rarely gets up much above force 4-5. Along the eastern part of the coast, the winds tend to come more from W or NW and are again usually little more than moderate. While infrequent, gales are not unknown during the spring and early summer and are typically caused by depressions further west in the Golfe du Lion which bring strong N winds as they move further E. In winter, the tramontana, a strong N wind off the Alps, is more frequent, although the libecchio is a strong SW wind that can affect the whole of the Ligurian coast and blow for several days, causing heavy seas.

Sources for weather forecasts:

  • There is a continuous (computerised voice) weather forecast on VHF 68 - first in Italian and then followed with an English translation
  • The same forecast is given in Italian and English on VHF coastal stations following a notification on channel 16
  • Navtex weather forecasts are broadcast from stations at La Garde (Toulon), Roma and Cagliari (Sardinia)

The marina is situated immediately E of the town around a mile W of Capo Mele. The long L-shaped outer breakwater is conspicuous at the E end of the town’s long sandy beach.

In settled weather or moderate winds from NW round to NE, anchor in 4.0 - 5.0 metres off the western end of the marina breakwater. Holding is good in sand.

Things to do Ashore

The town itself is popular for beach and all manner of watersports but there is not a great deal of architectural or historic interest, other than a 10-arched mediaeval bridge and some castle remains. The mediaeval village of Cervo five kilometers to the SW is worth a visit.
