Anjouan (also known as Ndzuwani or Nzwani, and historically as Johanna or Hinzuan) is an autonomous high island in the Indian Ocean that forms part of the Union of the Comoros. Its chief town is Mutsamudu and, as of 2006, its population is around 277,500. The total area of the island is 424 square kilometers (163 square miles).

Port of Entry

Mutsamudu is the second largest city in the Comoros, founded in 1482. It is also the capital and largest city on the island of Anjouan. Mutsamudu is a deep water port and the main port of entry for Comoros. For clearence you can tie to the quay but then it is best to anchor off near the port.

Caution: Be aware that just a few meters S of the quay, at about 7 m depth, there are 2 reefs and a sunken wreck.

  • Ouani Airport has daily flight from every one of the other islands in the archipelago
  • Travelling by boat to Grande Comore (Moroni) or Mohéli (Fomboni) can be done either by speedboats or cargo boats
  • There are plenty of buses in Anjouan heading every direction
