Aerial view of Cortellazzo

The town of Cortellazzo lies on the river Piave, which disgorges into the Adriatic eight miles NE of the river of Piave Vecchia and 16 miles NE of the Porto Lido entrance to the Venetian Lagoon. Depths at the river entrance are as little as 1.5 metres at low water and therefore Cortellazzo is only really suitable for shallow draft vessels. The river should only be entered on a rising tide, close to high water and in settled conditions. There are two marinas in the river, the shallow Marina di Cortellazzo and the deeper Nautica Boat Service.

During the summer months, the prevailing winds in the Adriatic are light to moderate coastal sea breezes. In spring and autumn, northerly winds are more frequent and can quickly rise to near gale force, especially in the northern Adriatic, where the much-feared “bora” is caused by high pressure over the mountains to the NE coupled with low pressure over southern Italy. Fortunately, the fiercest “bora” is normally to be expected in the winter months. Thunderstorms are occasionally experienced in spring and especially autumn and can be accompanied by violent winds of gale force and above. Luckily they are rarely long-lasting. Fog is a further hazard often encountered in the lagoon of Venice, especially in the early and late season.

Sources for weather information:

  • There is a continuous (computerized voice) weather forecast on VHF 68 - first in Italian and then followed with an English translation
  • The same forecast is given in Italian and English on VHF coastal stations following a notification on channel 16
  • Navtex weather forecasts covering the Adriatic are broadcast from stations at Roma, Trieste, Kerkyra (Greece) and Split (Croatia)

The entrance to the river Piave/wiki/Cortellazzo#PiaveWorld icon.png Piave [[Cortellazzo#Piave|Piave]] 45°31.680'N, 012°43.685'E is on the Adriatic coast of Italy, eight miles NE of Piave Vecchia and 16 from the Porto Lido entrance to the lagoon of Venice. The entrance is prone to silting and depths can be as little as 1.5 metres at low water. Entry should only be attempted close to high water and on a rising tide. The deepest water is indicated by a fairway marker buoy and marker posts leading into the river. Enter in the middle of the channel, keeping at least 10 metres off the posts. Entry should not be attempted in strong onshore winds. Beware of fishing nets extending from the riverbank upstream.

There are two berthing options in the river, the Marina di Cortellazzo with 124 berths for yachts up to 15 metres (however in very shallow water) and the Nautica Boat Service with 35 berths for yachts up to 15 metres.

Places to Visit

Very little of tourist interest in Cortelazzo, but the town is pleasant enough and the fish restaurants have a good reputation.
