Cruising the region

Cruising on the St. John's River south of Jacksonville is limited for some boats by bridge heights.

  1. In downtown Jacksonville, the Acosta Bridge has a clearance of 75 feet.
  2. South of downtown, Interstate 295 (the Jacksonville beltway) is carried over the Buckman Bridge, with a clearance of 65 feet.
  3. The Shands Bridge, just south of Green Cove Springs, has a clearance of 45 feet. The Shands Bridge is the controlling height for the entire navigable extent of the St. John's River, extending south to Sanford, Florida and for smaller boats, dinghies, or kayaks, beyond.

Cruising is somewhat constrained north of Green Cove Springs by few good anchorages, by substantial current in many areas and by a lack of sheltered locations, exposed to both weather and the wakes of commercial traffic. Most cruisers find marina berths for their stay in Jacksonville.

Farther up-stream, south of Green Cove Springs, power boats and smaller sailboats (give the 45 foot height limit) have an extensive and rewarding cruising venue.

For cruisers who stop in Jacksonville, full urban amenities are available.

Navigation

St. Johns Lighted Buoy "STJ" (30º23'35.368" N, 081º19'08.398" W) marks the outer approach to the St. John's River. Light: Mo (A) W, Range: 6 NM, Red and white stripes with red spherical topmark, Racon: M (--).
St. Johns Light (30°23'10"N., 81°23'53"W.), 83 feet above the water, is shown from a white square tower on the beach about 1 mile south of St. Johns River north jetty. A tower at Jacksonville Beach and a red and white checkered water tank at Mayport Naval Station are prominent off the entrance, and water tanks are prominent along the beaches to the southward.
Entry to the St. John's River is between two stone jettys extending about one half mile to seaward. Current can be strong, particularly on the ebb. Give commercial shipping a wide berth. Keep clear of Mayport Naval Station on the port (south) side just inside the entrance. You do not want the attention that comes of crossing the line.
Downtown Jacksonville is about 20 NM inland from the entrance of the St. John's River. The route is well marked. Current may be strong at full ebb or full flood, and a watch for commercial traffic is important. Otherwise the passage up the river is not difficult.

If there is a port of entry submit details about facilities for checking in - where to dock, location of immigration & customs, etc.
