La Linea, on the border between Spain and Gibraltar, has long played second fiddle to its larger neighbour to the south, Gibraltar, where marine activities are concerned. That situation was to change dramatically in March 2010 with the planned opening of the huge new Alcaidesa Marina and residential development just a short 5-minute walk north of Gibraltar airport.

This marina will offers a total of 624 berths on finger pontoons for yachts of sizes ranging from 8.0 up to 1000.0 metres. The development also includes a 265-room hotel, convention centre and a wide range of retail and catering outlets. A large hard standing area and repair facility is also planned.

The marina is divided into 3 main areas: an area for sport and pleasure boats, a commercial marina with a slipway and dry dock, and lastly a commercial and recreational area. The port has a land surface area of 134,255 m² and a sheltered water sheet of 139,760 m². It also includes covered areas of more than 15,000 m² for commercial and leisure as well as nautical use. In addition to this, there are around 1000 parking spaces.

The Marina differs from its competitors along the coastline of Andalusia in that it boasts a water and electricity supply tower for every two moorings, with independent meters and systems for pre-payment and payment based on consumption. The berths are wider than usual, being designed to accommodate modern boats, and WiFi internet access is available as well as a television connection on pontoons P10, P11 and P12. All of the pontoons can be accessed independently via locking systems activated by proximity cards to allow easy access for users, and at the same time to guarantee the security of the boats.
