The town and marina of Mazagon is situated at the entrance to the Rio Odiel, the major river leading up to the Spanish port of Huelva. The town lies approximately halfway between the Portuguese Algarve and Gibraltar, 27 miles east of the Rio Guadiana and 30 miles NW of the harbour of Chipiona. The modern, 500-berth marina of Puerto Deportivo de Mazagon is well protected from all directions and is a good base for exploring the Doñana National Park and Odiel Nature Reserve as well as the historic Spanish port of Huelva.

Navigation

The entrance to the Rio Odiel is easily distinguished by the curving three-mile-long mole which extends the southern bank of the river 1.5 miles out to sea from the adjoining coast. The end of the mole is marked by a prominent white pillar with a red top. Yachts should head for the W cardinal buoy marking the start of the buoyed channel into the river. The channel is marked by port and starboard hand markers. The Puerto Deportivo de Mazagon lies about one mile due north of the breakwater end, distinguished by a training wall which protects it from the south. The marina entrance is orientated WNW/ESE. Depths in the entrance are 4.5 metres.

Warning: Tidal currents can be strong on the ebb.

Berthing

Goto the marina. Alternatively, berth on the reception pontoon (which doubles as fuel pontoon) and visit the marina office.

Tourism

The town of Mazagon, 10 minutes walk from the marina, is a typical Spanish resort town, surrounded by superb sandy beaches and coastal pinewoods. The flatness of the terrain makes it a good area for cycling and there are several cycle paths around the town. The historic port of Huelva is about 20 kilometers away by road and has an interesting museum with replicas of the three ships that formed Christopher Columbus’ fleet of exploration.

The salt marshes around Mazagon are excellent for birdwatching, especially during the migration season. Directly opposite the marina, are the islands of Saltés, Enmedio and Bacuta, which form part of the Odiel Nature Reserve, where the largest colony of spoonbills in Europe gathers along with numerous other species of birds. With suitable transport, one can also explore the natural wonders of the Doñana National Park forty kilometers to the east.
