Papua New Guinea, an Australian territory from 1949 until its independence in 1975, is a land of diverse cultures and rugged terrain. Headhunting and cannibalism were still practiced until relatively recent times, and remote tribes have been found in the last 50 years that had never before seen a white man.
Although not regarded as a typical tourist travel destination, PNG's mining interests—particularly on Bouganville Island—ensure a steady stream of Westerners to the area. The waters in the region contain some of the rarest and diverse species on the planet.

Security
Certain parts of PNG can be quite dangerous, but larger cities are relatively safe as long as you're sensible. However, be aware that foreign workers often live in guarded compounds for security, and that random violence can and does break out occasionally. If it does, you won't normally get help from local police.
