Navigation

From either north or south the projecting breakwaters of the harbour are conspicuous. The harbour is entered on a bearing of 045. If entering from the north, give the northerly breakwater a wide berth, especially with any swell running, since waves often break at its extremity. There is also an isolated rock close to the inside of the breakwater. Once in through the entrance, turn to starboard past several unlit green buoys marking shallows near the breakwater. The marina pontoons are at the southern end of the harbour.

Berthing

Marinas & Yacht Clubs

  • Marina da Povoa de Varzim has a total of 241 berths and can accommodate yachts up to 18 metres. Click on link for separate Wiki entry.
  • Clube Navala Povoense. The yacht club is located in the marina and responsible for its management. Bar and restaurant. WiFi. Reportedly very welcoming to visiting yachtsmen. Telephone: +351 252 622791. Website.

Anchorages

It is possible to anchor with care in the harbour. Anchor towards the NE corner in depths of 3.0 - 4.0 metres, ensuring you are not impeding other vessels. Holding is good in mud and sand. In 2018 we (Artemis of Lleyn) anchored one night in the NE corner and had no problem. The lifeboat coxn waved as they passed. Later, in the marina, we were told that anchoring in the harbour is not allowed and that we should have expected a visit from the police.
