Risan harbour from W

Risan (Montenigrin/Serbian: Risan, pronounced (rîsan), Italian: Risano, Serbian cyrillic: Рисан, Latin: Risinium, Greek: Ρίζων, Rhizon, Albanian: Rizoni, Venetian: Risan) is a town in the Bay of Kotor, Montenegro. It is situated at the extreme N end of the western arm of the Bay, just under two miles N of Perast and around seven miles by sea NW of Kotor. The town is hemmed in on three sides by steep mountains, making for a spectacular setting. Risan's main claim to fame is the discovery in 1930 of the site of a Roman villa with some impressive mosaics, which can be visited today. The town has a small harbour which can accommodate up to three moderate draft yachts alongside in depths of 2.5 – 2.75 metres. Shelter in the harbour is very good, although it is subject on occasion to strong N thermal winds.

Navigation

The approach is free from hazards, although there are shallows close inshore immediately W of the harbour. The harbour is very small and manoeuvering in it with any strong winds could be tricky. Variations in atmospheric pressure can create a significant rise and fall in water levels of up to 25cms, so lines and fenders need to be positioned accordingly.

Entrance

Risan is not a port of entry.

Berthing

Yachts moored in Risan harbour

There is space or around three yachts alongside the inner, land side quay of the harbour – between the two sets of steps – where the depths are 2.0 metres at the quay but 2.75 metres where your keel will be lying. There is a small ledge along the quay, but this is not a problem if you are suitably fendered. It is not possible to moor along the outside of the breakwater, as this is a customs quay, or at the end (as suggested in some pilot books), since there is nothing to take lines to.

The bollards are widely spaced on the quay and set back around a metre, so it can be slightly tricky getting lines ashore. Shelter is very good in all conditions, although there can be fresh to strong overnight thermal N winds so it is best to berth with bows N for a quiet night.

The main Herceg Novi – Kotor road runs close to the harbour, so earplugs can be an asset.

Tourism

Mosaic of Hypnos, Risan
Roman floor mosaic, Risan
Street scene, Risan

The main attraction of Risan is the remains of the Roman villa, situated around 250 metres SE of the harbour, past the park and up the hill. Several rooms of the villa with their mosaic floors have been preserved; the highlight (not least because the mosaic is in colour) is the mosaic in the presumed master bedroom of the villa, which features Hypnos, the god of sleep, recumbent on a couch with his eyes firmly shut.

Grocery & Supply Stores

  • Good minimarket (MiniMaxi) next to the harbour (with fresh meat counter).
  • Larger Roda supermarket on R hand side of road up to Roman villa.
