São Nicolau is one of the Barlavento (Windward) islands of Cape Verde. It is located between the islands of Santa Luzia and Sal. Its population is 12,424 (2015), and its area is 343 km².

Tarrafal
There is one breakwater where the ferries dock. Yachts anchor off in the bay. This is a nice anchorage but one must select carefully where to drop the anchor; too far south and the swell causes severe rolling; too far north and the bottom is rocky with poor holding. The holding is good in the black sand in 5 to 10m.
