Ulcinj old town

Ulcinj (Montenegrin: Ulcinj/Улцињ, pronounced (ǔlt͡siɲ); Albanian: Ulqin or Ulqini; Italian: Dulcigno) is a coastal resort town and municipality in Montenegro. The population is majority Albanian and thus the town has a distinctly oriental flavour and hosts several mosques. The southernmost harbour in Montenegro, Ulcinj is a popular and busy tourist resort and very noisy during the season. It has a small and high quay with depths of 3.0 – 4.0 metres alongside, although most yachts visiting Ulcinj tend to anchor off in the bay. Shelter is moderate to good in settled weather but a swell creeps in with any strong winds. Ulcinj bay is completely open S and any strong winds from that direction make it untenable. Ulcinj is not a port of entry, so tends to be visited only by yachts heading S to Albania.

Navigation

There is an isolated rocky shoal, Guri Geranis, just over four miles SE of Ulcinj bay, and a series of rocks close inshore on the approach from N (which are avoided if a yacht stays outside the 10 metre contour), but no other dangers.

Check-in facilities

None, Ulcinj is not a port of entry.

Berthing

There is space for 2/3 yachts alongside the SE side of the jetty at Ulcinj, though sometimes it is occupied by fishing and tripper boats. Depths here are 3.0 – 4.0 metres. The quay is quite high and it can be difficult to get ashore from low freeboard yachts. The shelter here is only moderate and it is probably unwise to berth here unless in settled weather. The alternative in such conditions is to anchor off in the bay (as long as there is nothing southerly in the forecast).

Marinas & Yacht Clubs

None.

Anchorages

Anchor as far into the bay as your draft permits. Most of the bay is quite shallow (the 5.0 metre contour runs across the bay from the S end of the quay). The holding is good in sand and weed. Shelter here is only moderate and it is best to move on with any sign of bad weather.
