Welcome to CruisersWiki!

We all look forward to your valued contributions to the Cruising Wiki. Help it grow as a useful, free resource for all cruisers around the world.

Spend a little time reading the help pages (link in L/H menu) and the Style Guide to gain a better understanding of the Wiki formatting and how to edit articles. Please add what you can - even correcting grammar and spelling errors in articles is a great help. The more you use the Wiki the easier (and more addictive) it becomes.

Use any page's "Discussion" tab (top of page's menu) to ask any questions or make any suggestions about that particular page.

Please set your personal preferences in "My Preferences" (link at top R/H of page when logged in).

Also, please read the Cruiserswiki Copyrights notice, as well as the General Disclaimers (links at bottom of pages).

Again, welcome and have fun! Bring out that hidden "Cruising Guide writer" in you. Istioploos 09:46, 19 May 2012 (BST)

Some Editorial Comments

I am very pleased that you have been active since you haver joined our group. I would like to offer some suggestions on how to become more effective. For this I will use as an example your recent editing of Paros:

  • There is no need to insert blank lines following a title i.e. ====Parikia==== and many other places where you have introduced them
  • I have restored in Parikia as well as elsewhere the images that you have edited and removed titles and links to chartlets and photo galleries. These you should leave alone and if anything enhance
  • The use of
instead of simple
is the recommended practice of the current html standards. Please leave them alone and where possible follow the standard
  • You have correctly added your name and flag under Last Visited & Details Checked (and updated here) but
    • The wikimedia works with just an & and there is no reason to replace it with &"amp;". Further this may cause difficulties to to other pages that refer to it via a link
    • After adding your name please add an extra line starting with an * to encourage future contributors to also add their name
  • Please limit your editing to adding new information
  • Finally if you add new information, please enter your name in the list of contributors under ==Personal Notes==

For more details please refer to the Wiki Editors Guide and the Style Guide. If you need any assistance and are not sure please do not hesitate to contact me at my discussion page under Istioploos.

Care with editing

Please make use of the Preview facility when making edits to pages on the Wiki. I've undone the changes you made to the Fethiye page as you wrecked the layout. If you use the Preview facility you can see if your changes are going to mess up the layout and then you can cancel them before the damage is done. I know it's not easy getting up to speed with the software, but there's no excuse for not undoing the changes you're trying to make once you see that they're going to wreck the page. --Athene of Lymington 23:38, 19 January 2013 (GMT)

A useful tip?

While you're getting up to speed on the Wiki, the best way to check if you're inadvertently introducing errors while editing an existing page is to open up a new tab in your browser, select the page for e.g. a nearby port or island that you know is correctly formatted, open it up also for editing and then cross-compare the two. You'll soon spot any inadvertent discrepancies in formatting between the two and what is causing them. The most common ones (I know!) are leaving a space at the front of a line (which then creates a dotted blue box, as you found with Fethiye) and omitting a bracket ([) or ({) or pipe (I) symbol, which messes up links. You'll soon discover others as you get more familiar with the Wiki formatting, but as long as you always Preview your changes first, you won't introduce unwanted errors.

Spaces in Headings

I would appreciate it if you will stop modifying headings with extra spaces.

For example you should leave along the correct:

==Marinas & Yacht Clubs==
The harbor is operated as small and very crowded marina.

==Anchorages==

and NOT change it to:

== Marinas & Yacht Clubs ==

The harbor is operated as small and very crowded marina.

== Anchorages ==

as you have done in Kalkan and elsewhere. It take effort to restore the damage of this heavy handed editing. Please correct factual mistakes, and add new material. If you need any assistance or have a question I will be more then happy to help. --Istioploos 18:45, 26 January 2013 (GMT)

George Town Exumas

I have modified the George Town Exumas that you have recently edited to conform with the latest Templates.

Please take a look. We do appreciate it when you add new material. If I can be of any help please do contact me. --Istioploos 18:39, 27 February 2013 (GMT)

Chios

I have restored the italics (Hotzas back to Hotzas, etc). By convention in most our pages we use italics to highlight restaurant, store, and similar names. It makes our pages more readable if they are consistent. Regards --Istioploos 13:20, 14 May 2015 (BST)

Skiathos

I noticed that you removed my entry about the unbearable noise from a disco that I experienced last time I was anchored off in the harbor of Skiathos. The noise went on and on during the Saturday night until sunrise.

I take it that the problem is no longer there and that the good people of Skiathos fixed the problem. Is that right?

Regards

Yes I think it is like the Yogi Berra comment - the future isn't what it used to be -

There was no significant noise other than the usual street traffic. The disco era is dead. I was surprised at how much accommodation there was in the harbour. The area Heikel marks as ferry was open to transient boats. There was no push back from the harbour master. The Port Police were very accommodating when I went there to change my transit log.

I was going to send you a note to inquire whether there is a copy write issue posting a C map chartlet. I could make a much improved Skiatholos chartlet using my cmap file via Expedition.

We have had great luck trying the restaurants recommended in the harbours we have been in.

We have 200 sailors in 40 boats joining us for a Cruising Club of America event in the Ionian in September. I have introduced them all to Cruisers Wiki.

Regards from Alonissos.

Les

Hi Les. I answered yesterday but the entry seems to be lost. So I am answering again.

I am very pleased that so much has improved in the harbor of Skiathos: no infernal disco, polite and helpful officials etc.

There are three versions of the chartlets: the MapTopo that has stopped working, my Navionics replacement for it, and static (sometimes annotated) C-Map. I have obtained clearance to use the Navionics from the company so the new one are very legit. Lighthouse had assured me, after an investigation, about 8 years ago that my posting copies form my C-Map GPS/Chart Plotter cartridges was Ok. So yes you too can do so.

I would not make copies of the Navionics because the permission is for links to their server.

This summer I am marooned in Washington, DC due to family health issues. So, I am very envious of your cruising in the Sporades and the Ionian. Good work of introducing new people to the wiki.

Many Regards Vasilis --Istioploos 02:57, 16 June 2015 (BST)
