Chart of Hammamet

Yasmine Hammamet is a very popular huge disneyland type tourist resort 3nm south of the more traditional city of Hammamet. The hotel bed capacity is reported to be more than 57,000 people. Yasmine Hammamet is just one huge tourist town with restaurants, bars, hotels, fun parks and sandy beaches with row upon row of beach umbrellas and sun lounges. The resorts hotels on the beach stretch 1.5nm south and 2.3nm north of the marina. There are no traditional buildings in Yasmine Hammamet.

In the last few years a new large marina has been built in the old harbor, though not much of the old harbour structures are left. It is the most expensive marina in Tunisia and charges while not European prices are high for Tunisia. The marina is suitable for large yachts with a number of yachts in the 30m and even 40m range apparently being permanently kept in the marina.

There is a nice Ribat (castle) and some picturesque houses of traditional architecture in Hammamet 3nm north of the marina.

Entrance

Yasmine Hammamet is a port of entry to Tunisia. But, like all Tunisian ports, you must check-in even if you have already been cleared into the Tunisia.

Check in facilities are all at the marina.

Go to the Police office, on the left end of the main building, to first clear in. They will ask for the vessel registration and insurance originals. They then take all passports and return them with a little entry card inside. There are a few sheets to fill in about the vessel, and anything to be declared. It takes about 45 minutes.

At that point expect to be asked for a gift. This gifting/tipping can be a bit controversial, but simply acknowledge different places operate differently.

For further details about clearing and advance notification of arrival see Tunisia.

Tourism

The Medina is nice with shady narrow streets full of stores. It is a picturesque town but too touristy. The Ribat is also worth seeing.

The beach here is lovely and wide stretching for miles with many fishing boats resting on its extremely fine sand. One can sit on the beach and enjoy beautiful sunsets. The fishing boats are all very run down. Nothing like the freshly painted and well maintained boats of Malta.
