Background

Kasos (Κάσος) with a population of about 1,500 and an area of 69.464 km2 is one of the most remote islands in the Aegean. It is desolate and very arid. Wondering around one sees very few people the whole place has a bleak and a feeling of abandonment. It very rarely visited by yachts mostly because it is far and in the middle of the notorious Karpathian sea.

Kasos was well known in antiquity and was mentioned by Homer as a participant of the war on Troy. During the 18th century it reached its peak with a considerable merchant (pirate ?) fleet. It participated in the Greek revolution and was almost totally destroyed by the invading Egyptian fleet in 1824. It has never recovered from that calamity referred to still today as the holocaust.

Approach and Navigation

Approaches to Karpathos are straightforward but there are very strong gusts, especially on the south side of the island, during the meltemi season.

Ports and Popular Stops

There are two small harbors in Kasos and a few anchorages in the area.

Emborió

GPS: 35°25′N, 26°56′E

Emborió (Εμποριό) or Port Kasos is a small harbor which can be quite crowded by fishing boats. It provides good shelter from the NW-W meltemi but it is open to the NE. Drop your anchor close to the shallow S side and come stern-to the quay.

Warning: Watch out for floating lines from the fishing boats, these can easily foul your propeller an/or prevent you from maneuvering.

Warning: With a S wind, anchor on the N side and take a long line to the S shore.

Fri or Fry (Φρύ) has a small harbor that was used for small boats. But in 1997 it was being enlarged and it should be able to accommodate a number of yachts.

The mole is being extended July 09, so there is a stream of lorries onto the pier dumping filler into barged creating a vast amount of dust. Yacht will need a complete wash down. Pier infested with cockroaches.
