Kasos (Κάσος) with a population of about 1,500 and an area of 69.464 km2 is one of the most remote islands in the Aegean. It is desolate and very arid. Wondering around one sees very few people the whole place has a bleak and a feeling of abandonment. It very rarely visited by yachts mostly because it is far and in the middle of the notorious Karpathian sea.

Kasos was well known in antiquity and was mentioned by Homer as a participant of the war on Troy. During the 18th century it reached its peak with a considerable merchant (pirate ?) fleet. It participated in the Greek revolution and was almost totally destroyed by the invading Egyptian fleet in 1824. It has never recovered from that calamity referred to still today as the holocaust.

Approach and Navigation

Approaches to Karpathos are straightforward but there are very strong gusts, especially on the south side of the island, during the meltemi season.

Ports and Popular Stops

There are two small harbors in Kasos and a few anchorages in the area.

Emborió

GPS: 35°25′N, 26°56′E

About half a mile east of Limin Fri is the small harbour of Emborios, which offers easier access for yachts in nicer surroundings than Limin Fri. Go alongside the mole, where depths are 3.5 meters from the end up as far as the ‘elbow’, after which depths shoal to 2.5 meters. Emborios has very clear water, a pleasant sandy beach, a café and two tavernas, but no water, electricity or other facilities. Shelter from the prevailing NW winds is good, but the harbour is open to the NE.

Warning: With a S wind, anchor on the N side and take a long line to the S shore.

Fri

GPS: 35°25.2′N, 26°55.4′E

The ‘new’ harbour at Limin Fri is currently (July 2009) closed for major repairs to the outer breakwater and the quays are piled high with huge concrete blocks. In any case, since the completion of the harbour local boats and fishing boats have moved in. There is thus little room for visiting yachts and this will probably continue to be the case even when the harbour eventually re-opens.

Other visiting yachts report that the pier is infested with cockroaches.--Summercruise 09:11, 10 July 2009 (UTC)

GPS: 35°20.6′N, 26°52.4′E
This is a deserted bay at the S end of Kasos that offers good shelter from the meltemi. Anchor in 4-8 m at the head of the bay. The bottom is sand and provides excellent holding. There are some gusts down the hills.

Offshore Islands

Armathiá Island

GPS: 35°26.1′N, 26°51.3′E
This isolated anchorage is favored by sponge fishermen from Kalymnos. It affords good shelter from the meltemi. The bottom is sand and provides good holding.

Makronísi Island

GPS: 35°27.04′N, 26°53.8′E
This isolated anchorage is favored by sponge fishermen from Kalymnos. It affords good shelter from the meltemi. The bottom is sand and provides good holding.

Tourism & things to do ashore

Fri

Other than Fri, the capital of the island, one can visit Póli, the island's acropolis, with the ruins of a castle and Halloekomána near Ammoúa. At Halloekomána there is a cave with stalactites and signs of ancient worship (Mycenian and Hellenistic).
