An online cruising guide for yachts sailing around Lake Tanganyika.

Countries near Lake Tanganyika

Overview

The first World War saw a lively battle for control of Lake Tanganyika between the Royal Navy, Force Publique and the Kaiserliche Marine during December 1915 and February 1916. Developments in the land-based conflict caused the Germans to withdraw from the lake, and control of the surface of Lake Tanganyika passed to the British and Belgians.

Nowadays the variety of unique marine life makes fishing is a major industry, with 100,000 people involved and 180,000 tonnes of fish taken annually.
