Digital Selective Calling

DSC, or Digital Selective Calling, is a feature on all new MF/HF and VHF marine radios. This feature allows you to contact another station using their MMSI number similar to calling them on a telephone. DSC also allows you to transmit your position to another vessel to let them know where you are. This is particularly important in a distress situation when, at the touch of a button, a distress signal can be broadcast with your position and type of emergency to all stations within range. This sets off an alarm on all radios receiving the distress signal reducing the risk that your call will be missed.

DSC is part of the GMDSS.
