The port of Fano is situated on the Adriatic coast of Italy around 30 miles NNW of the port of Ancona and eight miles SE of the harbour of Pesaro. The port, like many along this coast, consists of a canalized river basin, the Canal Albani, and two additional basins at its mouth, one of which contains a relatively new marina, the Marina dei Cesari, with berths for around 400 yachts of up to 30 metres. Severely damaged during World War II, the town nevertheless retains traces of its Roman and mediaeval past, including a triumphal arch erected in 2 AD by the emperor Augustus, an impressive 15th century castle and some sections of the town’s 15th century walls. The entrance to Fano is shallow (minimum 2.7 metres) and should not be attempted in strong onshore winds.

Local Weather

During the summer months the prevailing winds in the Adriatic are light to moderate coastal seabreezes. In spring and autumn, northerly winds are more frequent and can quickly rise to near gale force, especially in the northern Adriatic, where the much-feared “bora” is caused by high pressure over the mountains to the NE coupled with low pressure over southern Italy. Fortunately, the fiercest “bora” is normally to be expected in the winter months. Thunderstorms are occasionally experienced in spring and especially autumn and can be accompanied by violent winds of gale force and above. Luckily they are rarely long-lasting. In the southern Adriatic, the “scirocco”, a S/SE wind blowing up from North Africa which can last for several days, is more common. Unlike the “bora”, which can arrive without warning, a “scirocco” tends to build in strength over 24-48 hours, sometimes reaching gale force (especially in winter).

Approach and Navigation

The entrance to Fano consists of a narrow channel between a long breakwater, orientated WNW/ESE, which protects the basin in which the marina is situated and a shorter breakwater extending N from the shore on the western side of the entrance channel. Minimum depths in the entrance are 2.7 metres. Entry is difficult and potentially dangerous with strong onshore winds.

Note: along this stretch of the Adriatic coast tidal ranges can exceed 1.0 metre at springs, so judging the tides right can make a significant difference to safe access in most of the shallower harbours.

Berthing Options

Visiting yachts normally berth in the Marina dei Cesari in the northernmost basin, although space may also be available alongside in the Nouva Darsena, the commercial basin immediately S of the marina, or along the Canal Albani (for smaller yachts). The quays on both sides of the Canal Albani are managed by several yacht clubs, Club Nautico Fanese (telephone: +39 0721 807909), the Italian Lega Navale (telephone: +39 0721 830702); Yachting Club (telephone: +39 0721 801320) and Fisherman Club (telephone: +39 0721 801484). Maximum depths in the Nouva Darsena are 2.3 metres and in the Canal Albani 2.0 metres. There are few facilities at these berths.
