Langkawi Port of Entry
| |
Langkawi, officially known as Langkawi, the Jewel of Kedah is an archipelago of 99 islands (an extra 5 temporary islands are revealed at low tide) in the Andaman Sea, some 30 km off the mainland coast of northwestern Malaysia. The islands are a part of the state of Kedah, which is adjacent to the Thailand border. By far the largest of the islands is the eponymous Pulau Langkawi with a population of some 45,000, the only other inhabited island being nearby Pulau Tuba.
Langkawi lies north of the Strait of Malacca in the southern Andaman Sea near the border between Malaysia and Thailand. A few kilometres to the north lies the neighbouring Thai island of Ko Tarutao. The island group's main town, on the main island, is Kuah.
Charts
Charts that are specific to anchorages around Langkawi Island are:
- Malaysian Chart 5622
- Thai Chart 350 (The Thai charts are very good for the cruising areas between Phuket Thailand and Langkawi)
Weather
Give local weather conditions or refer to another page (a region or island group) that covers these conditions.

Islands
This section does not apply for most islands if that is the case for this one remove it. You may, however, list is small islands adjacent to this one or list one or two of its neighbours.
Communication
- Cruisers in Langkawi monitor 16 & 69 talk on 68 or elsewhere on legal VHF frequencies.
Also see World Cruiser's Nets.
Any navigation notes here. If this section does not apply remove it.
Entrance
Clearing into to Langkawi or Malaysia via Langkawi for a yacht and its crew and passengers is one of the most painless exercises that a skipper will endure anywhere on this planet.
For entrance details see Malaysia.
Berthing
Ports
When entering Bass Harbour close to 06d 19' North 099d 50' East; a very large statue of an Eagle (Brahminy Kite) will be observed in the North east corner of the Harbour - see blue arrow. Anchor boat red arrow.
Yellow arrow >> Harbor Master, Immigration and Customs (in that order) will be found in the Ferry Terminal. Dressing sensibly, with a modicum of modesty (this is an Islamic country and these are government Offices where everyone else is in uniform) with long trousers, and at least short sleeves on your shirt, knee length skirts and modest blouses or dress for the ladies, will soothe the way and make this one of the most pleasant checking-in experiences you have ever encuntered in your years of sailing.
Marinas
- Royal Langkawi Yacht Club Kuah, Langkawi, Kedah, Malaysia. 06d 18'12" North 99d 51' 06" East
- Telaga Harbour Marina Pantai Kok Langkawi. 06d 21' 42" North 99d 40' 21" East
- Rebak Marina Pualau Rebak Besar - Langkawi. 06d 17'18" North 99d 41' 31" East
- Awana Porto Malai Resort, 06d 16' 06"North 099d 44' 01"East Tel: 04-9555111, Fax: 04-955-5222 or Email For reservations, call 03- 2718-1118 or visit website. Awana Porto Malai is south of Wavemaster. You will see the Star Cruises berth adjacent to it. A few Mediterranean style berths are available, stern-to the land-bound arm of the Star Cruises wharf. You can also anchor outside the artificial harbour and there are a couple of moorings which may be free ENE of the NE end of the sea wall (approx. 06d 16.65' N 099d 44.35' E). The Awana Porto Malai will hold mail and parcels.
Anchorages
Langkawi's anchorages listed here are those that are good for specific times of the year - unlike temperate and cold climes where seasons govern cruising activities - here it is the monsoons ie. the North East, between November and May, which comes without rain and the South West, between June and November, that brings rain from the Indian Ocean. Therefore in choosing where to anchor remember where the prevailing wind will come from and most importantly remember that during the SW Monsoon, winds called "Sumatras" will descend without warning from the west coming through for a short time at speeds that will have the potential to take your awning away and unfurl your headsail.
Note: Pulau in Malay means island
- Further Note: Ninety percent of the anchorages in and around Langkawi have a bottom of the thickest, most rancid, rank, stinking and clinging black mud you will ever see outside a septic tank. It is usually good holding but, if you anchor out and you do not have a good chain and deck washdown system, you will be shopping for one on your next trip ashore. Come prepared!
