Overview
The Republic of Nauru is an island country in Micronesia in the South Pacific. Nauru is the world's smallest republic, covering 21 square kilometres (8.1 sq mi). With 9,378 residents, it is the second least-populated country after Vatican City.
Do not visit Nauru. See below.
Do not get Nauru confused with Niue, which is a perfectly nice place to visit.
Cruising the region
To keep this section and this page really short: Do not visit Nauru. There are several reasons for this:
- There is no fringing reef, lagoon or useable anchorage. There are a few large ship moorings just off the port of Aiwo, however they are too large to be useful for a crusing yacht.
- The (Australian) customs agent in charge of clearance into and out of the port is extremely heavy-handed, and will suggest that any ship owner arriving without prior notice, permits (which don't appear to be obtainable by anyone arriving by yacht), and visas in advance has broken the law, and will ask vessels to leave regardless of the conditions, or face prosecution.
Recent changes to Australian immigration and asylum detention policy once again (as of late 2012) sees refugees being housed on the island. This is a fairly sensitive subject in Australia, and the officials in charge of implementing that policy are likely to become even more strict in deterring visitors to the island. Past attempts to run humanitarian convoys to the island have met with naval blockades and other government interference, and any visiting cruising vessel is likely to be treated in much the same manner.
Although one vessel has in the past (2010) reported that they were able to heave to in the lee of the island and have fuel brought out to them, the recent changes in detention policy are likely to see even this refused.
Simply: Do not go there.
