Map of Culebrita

Isla Culebrita is a small island near the north east corner of Culebra. It has no infrastructure or residents and the old lighthouse was automated some years ago. It is a coral island approximately 1 mile in length and tidal pools trap small sea life at low tide.

Anchorages

Culebrita has two popular anchorages. They are commonly referred to as the North Anchorage and the South Anchorage. (If someone knows of better names please change this.)

North Anchorage

North Anchorage, Culebrita, Spanish Virgin Islands

The north anchorage is a big beautiful bay large enough for many boats. It is a very popular weekend spot for boaters from Puerto Rico. As seen in the picture they anchor stern to the beach and raft together leaving plenty of room for a dozen or more sailboats to anchor

In 2009 there were a half dozen mooring balls, in 2010 only one remained. The bottom is sand with light sea grass. Setting an anchor is easy and the holding is good.

“The Jacuzzis” make a nice destination for a good walk, just be careful of the cactus.

South Anchorage

The south anchorage is along the south east shore west of Punta Arenisca. There are several moorings, use them. The western most balls are over the reef providing easy access to good snorkeling.

The hike to the lighthouse takes a moderate amount of effort along a poorly marked path, but the view is worth it.
