Old town of Trogir

Ciovo Island is situated opposite the port of Trogir on the mainland coast of Croatia two miles SW of the harbour of Split. The island is joined to the mainland by a road bridge at Trogir (which does not open) and is thus virtually a suburb of the town. The ACI marina of Marina Trogir is situated on the N coast of the island and there is one further small harbour and four anchorages around its shores. While the island itself has its attractions, its main appeal to visiting yachts is as a base for visiting the World Heritage listed site of Trogir.

Weather

Diurnal winds among the islands are mostly moderate during the summer months, predominantly from NW and rarely exceeding force 4/5, although gusting is common in narrow channels between islands and on the lee side of headlands. At night, katabatic winds off the mountains affect some of the islands close to the mainland coast. During early spring and (especially) autumn conditions can be more unsettled, occasionally accompanied by violent thunderstorms - luckily of short duration - with winds of 30-35 knots or more and vicious, steep seas. In the winter the sudden, violent N wind off the mountains, the bora, is much to be feared, especially along the coast from Rijeka down to Zadar, although its effects can be felt as far south as Split.

Equally prevalent in winter - although not uncommon in summer - is the scirocco, a S/SE wind that blows up from North Africa, usually in advance of a depression moving E across the Mediterranean. Unlike the bora, the scirocco only occasionally exceeds gale force, but is still a phenomenon to be wary of, especially if on a lee coast.

Navigation

Add any navigation notes such approaches, dangers etc here. If this section does not apply remove it.

Entrance

Split is the nearest all-year round port of entry. During the summer, Hvar and, if arriving from N, Primosten on the mainland are also ports of entry.

Berthing

There are six berthing options on the island, the marina of Marina Trogir and the small harbour of Slatine on the N side of the island, and the anchorages of U. Razetinovac, U. Sv. Fumija, U. Duga and U. Movarstica on the W and S sides. Click on link at top right of page for Interactive map of harbours and anchorages or for full details see below.

Slatine

Harbour icon Slatine Slatine 43°29.969'N, 016°20.392'E
The approach to Slatine is free of dangers. Depths in the approach are 5.0 - 6.0 metres and in the harbour entrance 4.0 metres. Visiting yachts berth wherever they can find space on the inside of the E breakwater. There is space here for 3-4 yachts in depths of 3.0 - 4.0 metres. Shelter is good in all conditions but N winds. No facilities on the breakwater. Restaurant and café/bar ashore. Shops in the village, half a mile away.

Anchorages

The main anchorages on Ciovo island are as follows (anti-clockwise from Marina Trogir):

U. Razetinovac

U. Razetinovac/wiki/%C4%8Ciovo#U._Razetinovac
Anchorage icon U. Razetinovac U. Razetinovac 43°29.581'N, 016°14.207'E
The anchorage of U. Razetinovac lies a mile E of the westernmost point of Ciovo Island, just over a mile due S of the entrance to Trogir. It consists of a sickle-shaped inlet curving from N round to E and offers good shelter from all but NW winds. Anchor as far in as your draft permits. Depths range from 2.0 metres in the centre of the inlet to 6.0 metres at the entrance. The holding is good in sand and weed.

U. Sv. Fumija

U. Sv. Fumija/wiki/%C4%8Ciovo#U._Sv._Fumija
Anchorage icon U. Sv. Fumija U. Sv. Fumija 43°29.229'N, 016°13.270'E
U. Sv. Fumija is a cove just NE of the small islet of Sv. Fumija off the SW coast of the island. It is really a settled weather anchorage and offers reasonable shelter in N and E winds but is open S and (to a lesser extent) W. There is a sandy spit between Sv. Fumije islet and Ciovo with depths of 3.5 - 4.0 metres over it, which gives some shelter from the prevailing W/NW winds. Anchor in 5.0 - 6.0 metres. Holding is good in sand and weed.

U. Duga

U. Duga/wiki/%C4%8Ciovo#U._Duga
Anchorage icon U. Duga U. Duga 43°28.946'N, 016°14.815'E
U. Duga is a small, V-shaped cove about half a mile ESE of U. Sv. Fumija. It offers good shelter in winds from W through N to E but is open S. Anchor in 5.0 - 6.0 metres. Holding is good in sand and weed.

U. Movarstica

U. Movarstica/wiki/%C4%8Ciovo#U._Movarstica
Anchorage icon U. Movarstica U. Movarstica 43°29.537'N, 016°16.378'E
U. Movastica lies a further mile NE of U. Duga and consists of a wide bay sheltered from all except S and SE winds. Anchor at the head of the bay in 5.0 - 8.0 metres. The holding is good in sand and weed. Small provisions shop and restaurant in the village.
