The Bosporus or Bosphorus, also known as the Istanbul Strait, (Turkish: İstanbul Boğazı) (Greek: Βόσπορος) is a strait that forms the boundary between the European part (Rumelia) of Turkey and its Asian part (Anatolia). The world's narrowest strait used for international navigation, it connects the Black Sea with the Sea of Marmara (which is connected by the Dardanelles to the Aegean Sea, and thereby to the Mediterranean Sea). It is approximately 30 km long, with a maximum width of 3,700 metres at the northern entrance, and a minimum width of 700 metres between Kandilli and Aşiyan; and 750 metres between Anadoluhisarı and Rumelihisarı. The depth varies from 36 to 124 metres in midstream. The shores of the strait are heavily populated as the city of Istanbul (with a metropolitan area in excess of 11 million inhabitants) straddles it.

Bosphorus has a strong, 3-4 knots, S going current. It is like a river. The current is less strong near the banks. There is very heavy traffic in Bosphorus. Large, I mean really large, ships ferry oil from the ports of the Black Sea to the Mediterranean while local traffic crisscrosses the "river". The heavy commercial traffic is controlled within shipping lane but outside these, near the banks, there is a free for all. Great care is needs to be taken by yachts, especially when going against the current.

Special Navigation Notes and transit details

Stay as close to the shore as possible, the current is less severe.

Warning: Always transverse Bosphorus perpendicularly to the shipping lanes and keep a continuous watch-out for traffic. This is one of the busiest body of water in the world.

Danger: Very often there is a heavy fog and the strait is closed to traffic. Always listen to Bosphorus Control on the VHF (channels 11,12, and 13).

Bordering Countries (with Port details)

There are several anchorages along the banks, but they are usually crowded by local boats and there is hardly any room for a visiting yacht. This is not the only difficulty. All these anchorages are deep and exposed to the currents and eddies.
