The tiny harbour of Brela lies on the Adriatic coast of Croatia three miles SE of the settlement of Omis and one mile NW of the equally small harbour of Baska Voda. The village’s setting is superb, under the slopes of Mount Biokovo and surrounded by small sandy coves fringed with pine trees. The harbour here has been expanded and refurbished in recent years, but there is usually very little space for a visiting yacht and it is wise to come early and have an alternative mooring plan. Shelter in the harbour is adequate in settled weather but poor in S or W winds, when shelter should be sought in Split or on the island of Brac.

Local Weather

Diurnal winds along the coast are mostly moderate during the summer months, predominantly from NW and rarely exceeding force 4/5. At night, katabatic winds off the mountains are a feature of some of the harbours along the NE Adriatic coast. During early spring and (especially) autumn conditions can be more unsettled, occasionally accompanied by violent thunderstorms - luckily of short duration - with winds of 30-35 knots or more and vicious, steep seas. In the winter the sudden, violent N wind off the mountains, the bora, is much to be feared, especially along the Velebitski channel. It tends to blow less strongly S of Zadar.

Equally prevalent in winter - although not uncommon in summer - is the scirocco, a S/SE wind that blows up from North Africa, usually in advance of a depression moving E across the Mediterranean. Unlike the bora, the scirocco only occasionally exceeds gale force, but is still a phenomenon to be wary of, especially if on a lee coast.

For sources of weather forecasting, see Croatia.

Approach and Navigation

There are no hazards in the approach. The harbour can be identified by the curved breakwater enclosing two small basins divided by a central pier. The harbour is entered from W. Depths in the entrance are unknown but likely to be in excess of 5.0 metres.

Berthing options

Berth wherever you can find space alongside the quays in the outer basin, clear of the moorings. Alternatively, you may be able to pick up one of the moorings if the user is away. Depths in the outer basin are unknown but likely to be 3.0 - 5.0 metres. Depths on the breakwater are probably in excess of 6.0 metres.
