The island of Capri, just three miles off Punta della Campanella at the southern end of the Bay of Naples, is one of the most famous in the Mediterranean. Originally popularized by the Roman emperor Tiberius, who had several villas built on the island, one of which he lived in permanently from 27AD to 37AD, Capri has been the haunt of celebrities ever since. The singer Gracie Fields built a villa on the south coast at Marina Piccola, while the Swedish royal family’s doctor Axel Munthe constructed his on the foundations of one of Tiberius’s ruined villas. Other distinguished Capri villa owners include such varied personalities as Russian revolutionary Maxim Gorky and singer/songwriter Maria Carey. The island’s rugged beauty and easy access from the mainland attracts hordes of tourists during the summer and space is equally at a premium in the island’s main harbour of Marina Grande and anchorage of Marina Piccola.

Weather
Prevailing winds in summer are from the east in the morning and NW in the afternoon. Shelter in the main harbour of Marina Grande is good in all winds except strong winds from N to NE, which send a considerable swell into the harbour.

The main harbour of Capri, Marina Grande, is situated on the north side of the island in the saddle between the two high mountains. Approach from due north, keeping a close eye out for ferries and hydrofoils, which have priority both entering and leaving the harbour. Once through the entrance, the berths for yachts are in the east basin. Give the east breakwater sheltering this basin at least 50 metres clearance as there are underwater rocks off it.

Marina Grande consists of two basins, a busy commercial harbour to the west and a marina for leisure craft to the east. The yacht basin provides up to 300 berths, including 30 for yachts in transit. Maximum length 60 metres. Depths in the marina are 2.0 - 8.0 metres. Yachts berth on the quays or one of the seven piers. There are laid moorings at all berths. Fuel. Water and electricity are available at most berths. Toilets and showers, WiFi. Electric cars.
Warning: The marina is very busy and eye-wateringly expensive during peak season.

Anchorages
Marina Piccola
Marina Piccola is the only other sheltered harbour on Capri (although only in northerly winds - it is completely open to the south). It is situated on the other side of the island to and due south of Marina Grande and consists of a wide bay bordered on the east side by three impressive sea stacks, Il Faraglioni. The anchorage here is very busy in high season and you will need to anchor wherever possible. The best shelter (if you can get in there) is in the cove under the restaurant built out on the rocks, where the depths are 6.0 - 10.0 metres and the holding is good on sand.
July 2015 - Mooring balls all over the place in the shallower areas. Superyachts in the 100'+ depths use their anchors. No room at all at 14:00 on 2/7 so the season is beginning earlier and earlier. -- Hogesinwa- There are numerous small coves around Capri that are suitable for lunch stops but none are recommended as overnight anchorages unless the weather is very settled.

Tourism
The most popular pastime on Capri is to catch the funicular railway up from the harbour and wander the narrow streets of the town before cooling off at one of the numerous cafés with spectacular views over the bay of Naples. The walk across the island to the anchorage of Marina Piccola and the impressive Il Faraglioni sea stacks takes you along some quaint, arcaded streets lined with arty boutiques.
Perhaps the island’s most famous natural feature is the Blue Grotto, a former nyphaeum during the reign of Tiberius and now a busy tourist attraction. Catch a motorboat from Marina Grande; you then transfer to a rowing boat (extra charge of Euros 11.50 in 2010), which takes you in through the narrow entrance. Entry is subject to tides and weather (very high waters and swell make entry dangerous).
Lovers of history and gardens will delight in the Villa San Michele in Anacapri, built around the turn of the 20th century by the Swedish royal physician, Axel Munthe, on the ruins of the Roman Emperor Tiberius' villa (entrance Euros 6 in 2010). The villa offers wonderful views down over Marina Grande and the coast. While in Anacapri, pop into the little church of San Michele and view the astonishing tiled floor with scenes of the Garden of Eden. Finally, for those of a vigorous disposition, the two kilometre walk from the harbour to the ruins of Tiberius’s Villa Jovis at the extreme NE point of island will give a taste of the magnificent seclusion that so attracted the emperor to this spot.
