Overview

The relatively protected anchorage of Corong Corong is becoming popular in the North East monsoon as a stop for yachts provisioning to cruise the islands of the Bacuit Bay area. In the South East monsoon anchorage can be found off El Nido itself. This small village is developing quickly into a tourist area but is still fairly unspoilt and has clear, clean water in both anchorages. The dramatic backdrop of  offshore limestone islands makes this a nice stop and some yachts stay for months.

Anchorages

  • Corong Corong is south west of El Nido, just round the big headland. Fringing reefs on both sides should be avoided but the anchorage itself is sand, anchor in about 8- 10 m. Protected from north, east and south although wind does sometimes blow across the saddle into the anchorage, open to south west. We have found it good holding although we have heard of boats which have dragged.

Grocery & Supply Stores

Many small grocery shops, a pharmacy and a reasonable market selling fish, mud crabs, pork and sometimes red meat and chicken as well as vegetables.

Eateries

Turo turo (little restaurants serving local food in big pots which you choose from) are good value for money, there are also quite a few more up class restaurants.

Internet/WiFi

Internet via mobile modem from Smart or Globe, 3G in the anchorage, fast enough to use Skype sometimes.

Laundry

Motorbike & Car Rentals

In town, 700 pesos per day for a 150cc motorbike

Transportation

An airconditioned bus runs twice a day to Puerto Princesa ( 6 hours) and there is also a minibus five times a day. Jeepneys do the run too but are quite uncomfortable.

Routes/Passages To/From

Popular passages/routes, timing, etc.

An easy passage in the north east monsoon of about 90 NM from Coron, mostly in the lee of the Calamian group.

Personal Notes

El Nido is a pleasant, laid back little village, much nicer than Coron, which is becoming too comercialized. Prices are a bit lower and the anchorage is better too, since there is no reef and it is possible to anchor close in on sand. It also seems a bit less humid here.
