Background

The Gulf of Evia, that is the gulf between the large island of Evia and mainland Greece, is not a popular cruising ground. The waters of this gulf tend to be less clear than the Aegean and there is a sizable industrial development along the southern mainland. However, many yachts choose to transit the more protected gulf on their way from the Athens region to the Sporades islands instead of braving the notorious Kafireas Stait with is strong northerly winds.

Approach and Navigation

Approached to the gulf are straightforward. The trickiest part is transiting the Euripus Channel with its low bridge and strong tidal current which can reach 6-7 knots.

Check-in facilities

It is advisable to contact the Coast Guard (Limenarchio) in advance to get information about the Halkis Bridge. The information they may give you is not always reliable.

The major port in the Gulf of Evia is Halkis.

Halkis (Χαλκίς) or Chalkis or Khalkis [38° 27.7' N 23° 35.3' E] is the capital of Evia. It is a bustling and fairly pleasant place.

A yacht can wait for the bridge to open moored side-to by the customs house on the SE side of the channel. On the N side a yacht can either wait moored stern-to the NE town quay or anchor off on the NW side.

Warning: The bottom is full of objects where an anchor can get fouled. Use a trip line.

Halkis Bridge

The bridge spans the 39 m wide Euripus Channel and supports all the vehicular traffic into and out of Evia. Because of that the powers that be are very reluctant to open the bridge, especially during heavy traffic hours. Anyways, water traffic can only travel through the channel when the tidal stream, which can be as high as 7 knots is at a low point. As a result the bridge is only opened when the current is under 2-3 knots and at night. Boats that want to pass through the channel have to wait, sometimes for 2 days.
