Ile d'Oleron is the most southerly of the French Atlantic islands and one of the busiest during peak season, when French and other tourists flock across the bridge joining the island to the mainland to holiday in the island's many hotels and campsites. Outside the season, however, the island is one of the quietest, its undeveloped hinterland host to thousands of birds: kites, buzzards, kestrels galore, black backed stilts, herons and egrets. The main port of St Denis is a useful staging post for yachts planning to sail across Biscay to the coast of northern Spain. The smaller port of Le Douhet is only suitable for smaller yachts.
