An online cruising guide for yachts sailing to Ile d'Oleron

Ile d'Oleron is the most southerly of the French Atlantic islands and one of the busiest during peak season, when French and other tourists flock across the bridge joining the island to the mainland to holiday in the island's many hotels and campsites. Outside the season, however, the island is one of the quietest, its undeveloped hinterland host to thousands of birds: kites, buzzards, kestrels galore, black backed stilts, herons and egrets. The main port of St Denis is a useful staging post for yachts planning to sail across Biscay to the coast of northern Spain. The smaller port of Le Douhet is only suitable for smaller yachts.

The marina at St Denis offers alongside berthing on a visitors pontoon. It will usually be necessary to raft up, especially in high season. The harbour has a sill to prevent it drying out at low water, and access is possible around 2-2.5 hours either side of high water. Water and electricity are available on the pontoon.

Like most of the French Atlantic islands, Ile d'Oleron is equipped with an excellent network of cycle tracks and this is the perfect way to explore the island. The small port of Le Douhet is worth a visit, as is the colourful fishing harbour of La Cotiniere on the west coast. The route via the small port of Le Douhet to the Foret des Saumonards takes you through salt marshes and pine forests to some idyllic picnic sites on the SE coast of the island.
