Johor Bahru (Port of Entry)
Johor Bahru
| |
Johor Bahru, Malaysia is the country's second largest city. The term Johor Bahru can be used to refer to the city itself, or the region of Iskandar Malaysia in which it is located -- including the nearby satellite cities and towns of Nusajaya, Permas Jaya, Pasir Gudang and Pengerang. One of the main attractions of Johor Bahru is its proximity to the city of Singapore, while providing much cheaper prices for berthing and other services.
Local Weather
Johor Bahru has a hot and humid equatorial climate with rainfall throughout the year.
Sources for weather forecasts
- Malaysian Meteorological Service - navigate to the Marine section to find forecasts for the next 7 days.
- SGNEA Forecasts - The Singapore Government's National Environment Agency provides routine weather forecasts and storm warnings for shipping in the region. As a member of the World Meteorological Organisation, MSD participates actively in its Marine Meteorology Programme to enhance safety at sea and fufill our regional responsibility with WMO and the Safety of Life at Sea Convention (SOLAS, 1989 and 1974) of the International Maritime Organisation (IMO). National Environment Agency's Meteorological Service Division, produces one of the very best websites for marine weather forecasts covering the majority of South East Asia.
Charts
The causeway that links Johor Bahru with Singapore effectively divides the Johor Strait into 2 parts, the eastern part and the western part. Obstructing the western part is a bridge with a MLWS clearance of 25m.

- 4043 -- Kuala Johor and Sungai Johor
- 4038 -- Johor Strait Western Part
The NGA charts of this region are inaccurate and have been withdrawn.
The Navionics charts provide some coverage but are inaccurate and out of date in places, especially in the region of the new developments around Senibong Cove and the former Danga Bay marina.

Check-in facilities (for Customs and Immigration)
Although there is a customs and immigration facility in Johor Bahru, visiting yachts are best advised to clear customs and immigration at the nearby Tanjung Pengelih facility in Pengerang.
Berthing Options
See each of the marinas below for details.
Marinas & Yacht Clubs
With the closure of the Danga Bay Marina and the free anchoring area, there are 3 marinas to choose from in Johor Bahru.
- Puteri Harbour is on the west side of the causeway, 30 minutes by car away from Johor Bahru, in the satellite town of Nusajaya.
- Senibong Cove is on the eastern side of the causeway, about 15 minutes away just past Permas Jaya.
- Sebana Cove is much further from Johor Bahru, near the town of Pengerang at the eastern end of the Johor Strait.
Anchorages
No anchoring is allowed anywhere in the Johor Straits, except for short duration stops in the vicinity of Tanjung Pengelih or while waiting for tides near the various marinas. Even for short duration stops, be careful to anchor on the Malaysian side of the Johor Strait, as there are heavy fines for anchoring on the Singapore side.
