Kassiopi from the castle

The small harbour of Kassiopi is situated on the NE coast of the island of Corfu in the Ionian Sea of Greece, some two miles W of the narrow strait that divides the island from the coast of Albania. The harbour is constructed in a natural cove protected on its W side from the prevailing winds by the peninsula of Ak Kassiopi, on which there sits an imposing Byzantine/Venetian castle. Although relatively shallow, it offers berths for around 10-15 yachts of moderate draft anchor moored along its quays. Shelter in the harbour is adequate in the prevailing winds but poor in strong NE winds, in which it should be evacuated.

Navigation

The Venetian castle on the headland to the NW of the harbour is conspicuous from distance. There are no hazards in the immediate approach. Depths in the entrance are 3.5 - 4.0 metres.

Berthing

Yachts on Kassiopi quay

Yachts berth bows or stern-to using their anchors, usually along the E quay, where the depths vary from 1.5 to 2.5 metres. Alternatively, there may be space to go bows-to the short breakwater on the W side of the harbour. Depths here are greater, at 2.5 - 3.0 metres, but there is some rock ballasting along the quay which makes it difficult to get very close. Tripper boats use most of the W and S sides of the harbour during the season. Depths in the centre of the harbour, where you will be dropping anchor, are only 3.0 - 3.5 metres. The holding is moderate to good in mud and weed, but it may require more than one attempt to dig your anchor in. Shelter is good in the prevailing NW winds (although there is some swell if they are strong), but NE winds make Kassiopi very uncomfortable and probably untenable if they are much above F6-7.

Anchorages

There are several coves both E and W of the harbour where it is possible to anchor in settled weather, depending on wind direction. None of them, however, offers very good shelter if the winds are at all strong. Anchoring depths are 4.0 - 5.0 metres and the holding is mostly good in sand and weed.

Kassiopi castle retains some impressive features

Once a sleepy fishing village, tourism found Kassiopi several years ago and it is now quite a busy resort during the tourist season. Attractions include its nearby beaches, which can be accessed on foot or by one of the numerous tripper boats that ply the waters along the N coast of the island. The castle above the town, although largely ruined , has been restored in recent years and a walk around its walls is rewarded with some excellent views.
