Koločep Island is the southernmost of a chain of small islands lying barely two miles off the coast of Croatia. Known as the Elafiti Islands (from the Greek word elaphos, meaning deer, with which the islands were presumably formerly populated), the chain is mostly heavily forested and unspoilt. Several of the islands are popular day trip destinations for holidaymakers staying in Dubrovnik, but visiting yachts using the various anchorages around the islands can usually escape the worst of the crowds (especially outside the peak months of July and August) and even the busier anchorages quieten down at night when the tripper boats go home. Koločep Island is barely two miles WNW of the port of Dubrovnik, and thus the easiest accessible. It offers two attractive anchorages in settled weather on its NW and E sides, Donje Celo and Gornje Celo.

Add any navigation notes such approaches, dangers etc here. If this section does not apply, remove it.

Dubrovnik is the nearest year-round port of entry.

There are two principal berthing options on the island, the anchorages of Donje Celo, on the NW coast of the island, and Gornje Celo, on the E coast.

The bay of Donje Celo is situated on the NW coast of the island, protected from E by a long, wooded peninsula. There are no dangers in the immediate approach, although note that there is a shoal patch/wiki/Kolo%C4%8Dep#shoal_patchDanger icon shoal patch [[Koločep#shoal patch|shoal patch]] 42°40.606'N, 017°59.019'E around 400 metres off the headland at the W end of Koločep island. At the head of the bay is a hotel and buoyed-off swimming beach, together with a village shop. Anchor in 5.0 - 8.0 metres off the buoyed-off area. The holding is moderate in sand and weed (ensure you dig the anchor in well). Shelter in the bay is good in winds from all directions excerpt NW. Restaurant and café/bar ashore in the hotel.
The anchorage of Gornje Celo

Gornje Celo

Gornje Celo lies on the E coast of the island, immediately NW of a headland with a prominent aerial on top. There is a small hamlet ashore, with a simple café and a fish restaurant but little else. Anchor in 5.0 - 6.0 metres off the short breakwater, which is used by tripper boats. Holding is good in sand and weed. Shelter here is adequate in settled weather, but the anchorage is completely open from N round to E.

Give a short history of the island.

Places to Visit

There are a few fortifications around the island which remain from the days of piracy in the 16th century, but little else. There is a pleasant footpath which goes across the island between Donje Celo and Gornje Celo.
