The new, small porto turistico of Le Marinelle lies on the Adriatic coast of Italy eight miles SE of the harbour of Porto di Vasto and 12 miles WNW of the harbour of Termoli. The basin has been excavated from the shoreline near the small town of San Salvo to create a residential and marina development providing berths for around 200 vessels of up to 20 metres. Depths in the basin, however, are reported as around 2.0 - 2.5 metres, so it is only suitable for relatively shallow draught yachts.

Local Weather

During the summer months the prevailing winds in the Adriatic are light to moderate coastal seabreezes. In spring and autumn, northerly winds are more frequent and can quickly rise to near gale force, especially in the northern Adriatic, where the much-feared “bora” is caused by high pressure over the mountains to the NE coupled with low pressure over southern Italy. Fortunately, the fiercest “bora” is normally to be expected in the winter months. Thunderstorms are occasionally experienced in spring and especially autumn and can be accompanied by violent winds of gale force and above. Luckily they are rarely long-lasting. In the southern Adriatic, the “scirocco”, a S/SE wind blowing up from North Africa which can last for several days, is more common. Unlike the “bora”, which can arrive without warning, a “scirocco” tends to build in strength over 24-48 hours, sometimes reaching gale force (especially in winter).

Approach and Navigation

Le Marinelle can be identified on the approach by the two large apartment blocks at the seaward side of the basin. The rather tricky entrance lies in a gap between the long series of detached breakwaters protecting the beaches on either side. Entry is from due E to pass through the port and starboard markers on the breakwaters then S to enter the basin. Current depths in the entrance are stated by the harbour management as 3.5 metres at half tide. The entrance would be dangerous in strong onshore winds.

The basin is equipped with moorings operated by Le Marinelle SNC (telephone: +39 0873 801736; e-mail: [1]; website: [2]). There are around 200 berths here for yachts of up to 20 metres on pontoons and mooring posts. Depths range from 2.0 - 2.5 metres. Water and electricity on the pontoons. Toilets and showers. Typical daily berthing price for 14 metre yacht (December 2010): Euros 47.
