Background

Mayotte (French: Collectivité départementale de Mayotte), is an overseas collectivity of France consisting of a main island, Grande-Terre (or Mahoré), a smaller island, Petite-Terre (or Pamanzi), and several islets around these two.

Mayotte is located at the northern end of the Mozambique Channel in the Indian Ocean, between northern Madagascar and northern Mozambique. The territory is geographically part of the Comoro Islands, but has been politically separate since the 1970s. The territory is also known as Mahoré, the native name of its main island, especially by advocates of its inclusion in the Union of Comoros.

Mayotte Arrival and Departure Procedures

(21/10/07) It is now mandatory to enter Mayotte through the main pass in the north, M'Zamboro. This pass is well marked/lit and the chart is accurate (WGS 84) making arrival at any time of day possible. Entry through any other pass is strictly forbidden. Departure is permitted by any pass.

Yachts should anchor (or pick up a mooring) in "Bay de Pamanzi" (Dzaoudzi), and notify the Port Captain of your arrival on VHF16. All formalities are handled ashore - Port Captain, Immigration (Police aux Frontiers), and Customs (Douanes) - in that order - (no fees are charged).

Port Control: VHF 09 or 16, Ph: 02 69 601033, Fax: 02 69 601381.

ALL vessels must clear in (even French registered).

Contact the Port Captain on VHF 16 or 9 on arrival. Clearance formalities are all handled ashore - visit the Port Captain first who will provide a form to be taken to Customs, followed by Immigration and then finally returned to the Port Captain. Clearance is possible on Saturday and Sunday mornings. Basic French is required as the officials do not normally have any English. All boats, whether French or not, must clear in.

You may only move from your initial anchorage/mooring once clearance has been completed.

Visit Customs the day before departure from Mayotte for outward clearance.

Mayotte Immigration

French "Overseas Territory" visa regulations apply. Nationals of Western European countries, Argentina, Brunei, Canada, Chile, Czech Republic, Hungary, South Korea, New Zealand, Poland, Singapore, Slovak Republic, Slovenia and the United States do not require visas for stays of up to 30 days. All other nationalities require a visa (obtained in advance).

Customs

  • Yachts may remain for up to six months in Mayotte.
  • Firearms and ammunition MUST be declared on arrival.
  • PETS: Animals arriving must have valid rabies vaccination and health certificates.

Health

  • Malaria - prophylaxis is recommended.

Yacht Clubs/Marinas

The small Yacht club in the end of Pamanzi Bay is a very social place with good Friday evening BBQs. The bar is often filled with well informed locals that are more than willing to share and assist with local information. The Yacht Club has a well-stocked bar (no food), laundry machines, showers, internet access and water. Purchases are handled on a "card" system.

The club has a drying wall and haul-out facility.
