Background

The port of Nacala is Mozambique's most northerly port situated at 40º40'E, 14º27'S, on the south side of Baia deBengo, a large and sheltered bay 60m deep and 800m wide at the entrance. It is the deepest natural port on the east coast of Africa and serves as the terminal for the Nacala Railway, a rail link to the landlocked Malawi. South of Nacala is Mozambique Island, at one time the capital of Mozambique and now a World Heritage site.
