Omisalj yacht harbour from WSW

The large, commercial harbour of Omisalj is situated on the NW coast of the island of Krk in Croatia, around two miles S of the bridge connecting the island to the mainland and the city of Rijeka. The harbour lies at the end of a two-mile long inlet, the W side of which is lined with the conspicuous tanks of a large oil refinery. The yacht harbour and anchorage lies at the southern extremity of the inlet and offer good shelter in all but strong NW winds. The airport of Rijeka is close by.

Navigation

The large tanks of the refinery are conspicuous from a considerable distance, as is the bridge to the mainland two miles NE. The yacht harbour (to port) and anchorage (to starboard) are at the top of the inlet, nearly two miles on from the refinery. Avoid navigating too close to the tanker berths on the approach.

Entrance

Omisalj is not a port of entry. The nearest port of entry is Rijeka.

Berthing The best berth for a visiting yacht (if there is space) is alongside the short pier at the NW end of the yacht harbour. Depths here are relatively shallow, however, around 2.5 - 3.0 metres only and care is needed. Alternatively, a berth may be available on one of the two pontoons or the fore-and-aft mooring buoys of the yacht harbour. Depths here are 1.5 - 3.0 metres, the deeper water being at the end of the pontoons. Beware of the shallow rocky spit at the SW corner of the harbour. Shelter in the harbour is excellent in all conditions.

Marinas & Yacht Clubs

None.

Anchorages

The top of the inlet is a good anchorage in all but NW winds. Anchor in 5.0 - 8.0 metres 50 metres off the head of the inlet, which is buoyed off as a swimming area. The holding is excellent in sand and mud.

The hilltop old town of Omisalj

Originally a Roman settlement, Omisalj was an important town in the 15th century and still retains much of its mediaeval street plan. A 15th century defensive tower and a few remains of the old town walls serve as a reminder of its former importance. The town also contains several old churches and a Benedictine abbey.
