Quay at Plomin Luka in Istria

The narrow inlet of Plomin Luka lies on the E coast of the Istrian peninsula in Croatia, three miles NE of the larger inlet of Rabac and three miles W of the island of Cres. At the head of the mile-deep inlet is a large power station and the small village of Plomin, divided between a short quay on the N side of the inlet and the main village centre a steep 20-minute walk uphill. Depths are mostly too great for anchoring, but it may be possible in settled conditions to tie up on the quay if there is space among the fishing boats. The inlet offers a reasonably sheltered anchorage in settled weather, but a strong bora makes it very uncomfortable here and southerly winds send in a heavy swell.

There are no dangers in the immediate approach, although a heavy swell may be encountered in strong S winds which can make the inlet untenable. Shelter is reasonably good from all other directions, although a strong bora causes violent gusting down the inlet and entry is inadvisable if such conditions are forecast. The only suitable anchorage for a yacht lies at the top of the inlet, past the jetty of the power station on the W side of the inlet.

Anchorages

Depths in the inlet are mostly too great for anchoring, except at the head where space is in any case rather limited. It may be possible in settled conditions, however, to tie up on the quay. However, depths here are unknown and the quay is often occupied by fishing boats tied up three deep alongside.
