Preveza (Πρέβεζα) is a commercial port at the entrance of the Ambrakikos Gulf. In the vicinity there are at least 4 shipyards/marinas where many visiting cruisers winter their boats. There can be confusion because Preveza is often used to describe the facilities on both sides of the entrance to the gulf, when I believe that technically the town of PREVEZA is on the NW side and ACTIUM is on the opposite SE side, near to Preveza airport. The 2 sides are connected by a tunnel under the channel. The Preveza side is where you will find the commercial centre, port authorities, town quay, town marina and a small yard in an inlet about 0.8nM north. The Actium side is where you will find the 3 large yards that accommodate hundreds of wintering yachts. From N to S these are Aktio Marina, Preveza Marine and Cleopatra Marina. Therefore Preveza Marine is actually in Aktium not Preveza!

Local Weather

Approach and Navigation

The approach channel is well buoyed from offshore. Refer to official charts and publications for exact details.

Strong currents of up to 3 or more knots often run in this area and yachtsmen should watch that they are not carried sideways out of the channel.

Local boats may be observed to ignore the buoyed channel in part, however those unfamiliar with the local area are strongly encouraged to stay within the buoyed channel as there are shallows on both sides.

Check-in facilities

The Customs are in a new building on the Eastern breakwater of the town marina.

The port police office can take a little finding. From the town quay walk north along the quay until the uncompleted marina is on your right and a car park on your left. Cross the car park diagonally and look for the post office, distinguishable by three large yellow post boxes on the pavement in front. The port police office is above. The entrance is in the narrow street at the back of the building.

For payments of taxes you may be asked to go to the Tax Office 5-10 minutes walk away in the centre of Preveza! Ask for directions.

Marinas and other yacht berthing facilities

  • Preveza town quay. Stern or bow to with anchor. Alongside berthing may be possible at quieter times. Beware of a slight current which sometimes runs along the quay which can complicate handling if not allowed for. Water taps on the quay. Fuel by mini tanker (restricted times). Lots of bars and restaurants. Generally noisy with loud music often continuing until 3 or 4 in the morning.
  • Preveza town marina. An unfinished development at the northern end of Preveza town quay.
  • Cleopatra Marina. A small marina on the Aktio side of the Preveza channel. This is part of the Cleopatra Marina boat yard complex.

Yacht Clubs

None known.

Anchorages

Many cruisers can be found at anchor in the area N of the Preveza town marina. Take care of underwater obstructions in the vicinity of new pontoons and breakwater that are being extended to the north and east of the town marina.

Yacht Repairs and Services

Marine Stores

  • There is a Chandlery in both Aktio Marina and Cleopatra Marina boat yard on the Aktio side.
  • Within Preveza you have Preveza Yacht Services and a chandlery to the north of the quay which should have everything you need. Preveza Yacht Services focuses mainly on repair and engine products i.e batteries and filters.

Other repair work

Fuel, Water, & Electricity

Fuel

  • Mini tankers carrying diesel can usually be spotted patroling the quay throughout the season. Just get there attention and they will provide your fuel. Note that as the town quay is primarily a pedestrian area, access is not allowed after 17:00 hrs. In the absence of any mini tankers Preveza Yacht Services can arrange for a tanker to come to your yacht.
  • Fuel dock at Cleopatra marina.

Water

  • Free on the town quay. Look for water outlets in the grassed beds.
  • Cleopatra Marina. Requires smart card from marina office.

Electricity

  • Town quay (not working 2009)
  • Cleopatra Marina. Requires smart card from marina office.

Local Services

Grocery & Supply Stores

  • There is a small supermarket with an amazingly good range of items in the first street back from the waterfront. The shop front is quite small and the shop easily missed. It is on the waterfront side of the street. A larger two storey supermarket further away has a very limited selection of items.
  • Gas can be found in the super markets, just bring your old canister and they will swap it for a full one. It costs between 5 - 8 €.

Eateries

  • There are numerous bars and cafes along Preveza town quay, and a large variety of restaurants in the streets immediately back from the town quay.

Internet/WiFi

Laundry

  • There is a laundry services run from Preveza Yacht Services

Motorbike & Car Rentals

  • A car rental company operates from Aktio ( Preveza ) airport.

Tourism and Things to do Ashore

Tourism

Transportation

  • Flights from Preveza Aktio (PVK) airport. From May to October a number of charter companies operate direct flights from/to Manchester, Gatwick, Amsterdam, Dusseldorf and possibly some other European cities. Olympic Airways operate scheduled domestic flights to/from Athens which can be used to connect with flights from Athens to many international destinations. From the airport it is only a short taxi drive to the boatyards on the Aktio side or through the submersed tunnel to Preveza.
  • Flights from Corfu airport. Scheduled and charter flights operate to/from Corfu throughout the season. From Corfu there is a ferry to Igoumentisa (1.1/2 hour) and a coach/taxi can then be taken to Preveza (1 hr).
  • Buses. There are regular long distance bus services operating from Preveza's main bus station to Athens and other destinations. The express service takes 6 - 8 hours depending on traffic. It is advisable to reserve a seat a day or so in advance.
  • Taxis. Taxi ranks are located at the south of the quay and at the north on the main road.
