Rosslyn Bay has a reasonably large man made harbour, which is home to a number of commercial fishing vessels as well as being the mainland terminal for ferries that service the Keppel Islands. It also has a large marina complex for local pleasure vessels and visiting yachties. The harbour is approximately 8kms south of Yeppoon. Yeppoon is quite small, but has a good range of shops and supermarkets for a town its size, and caters reasonably well to the boating community, as so many people in the town and the surrounds spend time on and around the water. There isn't really a ships chandler (other than the very small one in the Marina office), but most requirements can be met within the town. There are two good sized hardware stores, a specialist paint store that stocks some marine paints. The pool shop has a good supply of hoses, and so on. The town has 2 small shopping centres as well, each centre having one of the major chains (the Plaza has a Coles and Central has a Woolworths). The shopping centres are on the same bus route that services the marina and harbour generally (the No. 20 bus that travels between Emu Park and Rockhampton and Rockhampton Airport).

Local Weather

Sources for Weather forecasts:

  • Australian Bureau of Meteorology forecast for Capricornia Waters
  • The Rockhampton office of BOM (aka Rocky Met) provide forecasts and observations on VHF Ch21 at regular intervals (07.20, 12.30, and 17.10). Cruisers are invited to share their own observations at that time, or to ask questions of the duty forecaster.

Approach and Navigation

There are no particular navigational issues. The harbour entrance is reasonably easy to see and well lit at night.

Berthing Options

Marina berth is the main option within Rosslyn Bay harbour, although the Capricornia Cruising Yacht Club has a pontoon on the eastern side of the harbour that visitors can tie up to for short periods.

Marinas & Yacht Clubs

  • Keppel Bay Marina occupies most of the harbour, and has casual and long term berths. They can be contacted on VHF 21 or by phone +61 (0)7 4933 6244. Until recently (January 2014) there was a courtesy car that could be borrowed for a shopping trip into Yeppoon, but it died and hasn't been replaced at the time of writing this (April 2014)
  • Capricorn Cruising Yacht Club is in temporary premises (a Caravan) at the moment (April 2014), but they are in the process of building new club rooms. It is very low key, but welcoming to visitors, and it is pleasant sitting on the deck over the water for sundowners.

Fuel, Water, & Electricity

Fuel
Fuel is available from the Fishermans Co-Op fuel dock, or from Pier One which is the point that the Great Keppel Island ferries depart from. Both are on the eastern side of the harbour. It is best to re-fuel at mid to high tide, as the harbour is quite shallow on that side. Warning: In 2007 I purchased fuel at the Fishermans Co-Op. After having the proprietor shout at me that they had the "cleanest fuel in all Queensland" and telling me off for using a Baja filter slowing down the refuelling process, I put about 300 litres of fuel through the Baja filter. After finishing fuelling I found a fair amount of water and a dead mouse in the filter. Delatbabel
Water
Water is available within the marina.
Electricity
The marina has all powered sites.

Things to do Ashore

Much of what is available to do ashore involves the town of Yepoon, a map of which is shown to the right.

Tourism

List places of interest, tours, etc.

Grocery & Supply Stores

  • Coles supermarket is located within Keppel Bay Plaza in Yeppoon (on bus route 20 from the marina).
  • Woolworths is located within the Yeppoon Central Shopping Centre (on bus route 20 from the marina).
  • There are 2 hardware stores in town, both in Tanby Road and in walking distance of Yeppoon Central Shopping Centre.
  • Also on Tanby Road between Yeppon Central and the hardware stores is a pool and tank business which has a good range of hoses (including fuel hose), a Repco Store (automotive spares), Yeppon Industrial Supplies, an Electrical wholesaler that sells to the public, and a number of other useful businesses.

Eateries

  • The Waterline is situated within the marina complex, and is one of the better restaurants in the area. It's not super cheap, but it's not masly expensive either
  • Beaches Restaurant is part of the Rosslyn Bay Resort, and has a fairly mixed menu from Asian fusion through to Pizza. It is a short walk from the marina itself
  • The Fishermans Co-Operative has a great range of fresh and frozen seafood - including fresh mud crabs, making your own boat one of the better places to eat after a trip over to that side of the harbour to get some of the good stuff they sell. They don't cook there, you would have to take your purchase back to your boat to cook yourself
  • The Keppel Bay Sailing Club is in Yeppoon itself, and has reasonable club style food at club style (reasonable) prices

Internet/WiFi

Available?

Laundry

  • The marina has coin operated washing machines and driers
  • There is a laundrette in Yeppoon itself where you can either wash yourself using coin operated machines, or you can leave the washing there, and they will wash and dry it for you. The laundrette is on James Street, about 2 blocks in from the beach

Motorbike & Car Rentals

Garbage Disposal

Garbage can be disposed of at the marina.

Transportation

  • Young's Bus Service (run by the State Government) has regular services that stop in Rosslyn Bay. Route 20 goes to Emu Park one way, and to Rockhampton the other, including services to and from Rockhampton airport. http://www.youngsbusservice.com.au/

Personal experiences?

  • Delatbabel -- Brief stop by in October 2007. The marina was pleasant and the staff were helpful but the fuel dock has problems.
