Approach

There are three harbors in San Diego County.

  • San Diego Harbor. Deep channel, south facing, good in all weather. Well marked with buoys all the way in. Lots of Navy and commercial shipping. Watch for submarines.
  • Mission Bay. Sailboats can go into Mariners Basin or Quivera Basin only as bridge height precludes the rest of the bay. West facing entrance can be difficult with large waves.
  • Oceanside Harbor. Small, but good facilities. About 30 miles north of Mission Bay. West facing entrance closes rarely in bad weather.

If coming from Mexico, check in at the police dock as described below. In days past a brief trip touching Mexican water didn't cause concern, but now check in even if you just touch the border.
