Silba Island lies off the mainland coast of Croatia, 10 miles SSE of the island of Lošinj and two miles W of the island of Olib. Six miles SE lies the tiny island of Skarda and, beyond it, Ist and Molat. An attractive and wooded island with a population of only 265, Silba has a long history dating back beyond the Roman era and, like many of the Croatian islands, has a strong seafaring tradition. Today the island survives on fishing and tourism, largely yachting tourism, and its interior is largely traffic-free except for agricultural vehicles. Visiting yachts have the option of mooring in the busy harbour on the E side of the island or one of two anchorages on the W side which offer good shelter in all but S winds.

Silba Harbour

Silba Harbour/wiki/Silba#Silba_Harbour
Harbour icon Silba Harbour Silba Harbour 44°22.492'N, 014°42.134'E
The harbour of Silba is situated on the E coast of the island, where it is narrowest. It is a popular port of call during the season, and it pays to arrive early during July and August if you want to moor here. There are laid moorings for around 30 yachts in the harbour, distributed between the breakwater and the E side of the pier opposite. Depths in the harbour entrance are 4.0 metres and at the breakwater and the pier from 2.5 to 3.0 metres. If mooring at the breakwater, it is best to go bows-to as there is ballasting in places. Shelter in the harbour is good, although strong NE winds would probably make it very uncomfortable.

Anchorages

Luka Silba moorings

Buoy icon Luka Silba moorings Luka Silba moorings 44°22.492'N, 014°42.134'E
There are mooring buoys laid outside to the E of Silba Harbour. The moorings are mostly in depths of 6.0 - 7.0 metres and offer reasonable shelter in settled conditions but are rather exposed in any winds from N round to SE. If all the buoys are taken, anchor in 6.0 - 7.0 metres wherever there is space. Holding is good in sand.

Luka Sv. Ante

Luka Sv. Ante/wiki/Silba#Luka_Sv._Ante
Anchorage icon Luka Sv. Ante Luka Sv. Ante 44°21.410'N, 014°42.062'E

Luka Sv. Ante lies on the SW coast of the island, a mile NW of the headland of Rt. Juzni Arat at its S extremity. The inlet has two arms, both of which offer good anchorages, although the N one offers better shelter in the prevailing winds. A white-painted chapel is a good landmark on the ‘bulge’ of coastline between the two arms. There are no dangers in the immediate approach to Luka Sv. Ante, although there is a reef off the headland at the entrance to the N arm, the end of which is marked with a bollard.

There are mooring buoys for visitors in both arms which can be picked up. Alternatively, anchor in 5.0 - 7.0 metres and take a line ashore to the stone jetty in the N arm or the stone bollards along the E side of this arm. Finally, it is also possible to free anchor in either arm. Depths in the S arm are greater, at 8.0 - 10.0 metres. Holding in both arms is good in sand and mud and shelter is good in all but winds from W round to S.

Luka Papranica

Luka Papranica/wiki/Silba#Luka_Papranica
Anchorage icon Luka Papranica Luka Papranica 44°23.321'N, 014°40.829'E
Luka Papranica lies on the W coast of the island, just over a mile NNW of the ferry pier serving the village of Silba, which straddles the island here at its narrowest point. The bay has N and E arms and the best anchorage is in the N arm, which provides good shelter in all but S winds. Anchor in 5.0 - 6.0 metres at the head of the N arm. The holding is good in sand and the water is very clear.

Tourism

Places to Visit

Silba is an attractive island, largely traffic-free and deservedly popular during the season in view of its safe harbour. Ashore there is little to do but appreciate the quiet charm of the village on the island or stroll its numerous pathways. The village contains an impressive octagonal lookout tower, the Toreta, built by a wealthy 19th-century sea captain and with an intriguing love story attached.

Popular beaches in Silba include Sotorisce, a sandy beach on the southern end and Pocukmarak, a picturesque pebble stone beach.
