Diurnal winds among the islands are mostly moderate during the summer months, predominantly from NW and rarely exceeding force 4/5, although gusting is common in narrow channels between islands and on the lee side of headlands.  At night, katabatic winds off the mountains affect some of the islands close to the mainland coast.  During early spring and (especially) autumn conditions can be more unsettled, occasionally accompanied by violent thunderstorms - luckily of short duration - with winds of 30-35 knots or more and vicious, steep seas.  In the winter the sudden, violent N wind off the mountains, the ''bora'', is much to be feared, especially along the coast from Rijeka down to Zadar, although its effects can be felt as far south as Split.
 +

 +
Equally prevalent in winter - although not uncommon in summer - is the ''scirocco'', a S/SE wind that blows up from North Africa, usually in advance of a depression moving E across the Mediterranean.  Unlike the ''bora'', the ''scirocco'' only occasionally exceeds gale force, but is still a phenomenon to be wary of, especially if on a lee coast.

There is little to do on the island.  Most yachts use the anchorages as a lunch stop, although U. Griparica is a popular overnight stop.  There is an interesting ‘fortified house’ at the head of U. Griparica, now converted to holiday apartments, with a cannon pointing down the inlet.

Weather

Diurnal winds among the islands are mostly moderate during the summer months, predominantly from NW and rarely exceeding force 4/5, although gusting is common in narrow channels between islands and on the lee side of headlands. At night, katabatic winds off the mountains affect some of the islands close to the mainland coast. During early spring and (especially) autumn conditions can be more unsettled, occasionally accompanied by violent thunderstorms - luckily of short duration - with winds of 30-35 knots or more and vicious, steep seas. In the winter the sudden, violent N wind off the mountains, the bora, is much to be feared, especially along the coast from Rijeka down to Zadar, although its effects can be felt as far south as Split.

Equally prevalent in winter - although not uncommon in summer - is the scirocco, a S/SE wind that blows up from North Africa, usually in advance of a depression moving E across the Mediterranean. Unlike the bora, the scirocco only occasionally exceeds gale force, but is still a phenomenon to be wary of, especially if on a lee coast.

Berthing options

There are just two berthing options for yachts visiting the island, the anchorages of U. Skarda and U. Griparica. For details see below under Anchorages.

Anchorages

Note: U. (short for Uvala) = cove. Click on the co-ordinates below for a simple map.

U. Skarda World icon.png 44°17.4′N, 14°42.00′E
The open bay of U. Skarda is situated on the N coast of the island, facing the islands of Silba[ and Olib about six miles N/NE. It offers little shelter in the prevailing NW sea breezes but is a pleasant anchorage in settled weather or in predominantly S winds. Anchor in 4.0 - 5.0 metres 100 metres NW of the small cluster of houses. The holding is good in sand. Shelter is only acceptable in settled weather and certainly with nothing N in the wind.

U. Griparica World icon.png 44°16.68′N, 14°42.9′E
U. Griparica is a sheltered inlet on the S coast of Skarda, barely a mile across the island from the anchorage of U. Skarda on the N coast. Shelter here is good in most conditions, although strong winds gust into the inlet. The anchorage becomes uncomfortable in fresh SE winds and would become untenable in a gale from that direction. There are mooring buoys laid in the inlet for visiting yachts and during July and August users are expected to patronize the restaurant ashore at the head of the bay. Depths in most of the rest of the inlet are too great for anchoring.

Tourism

There is little to do on the island. Most yachts use the anchorages as a lunch stop, although U. Griparica is a popular overnight stop. There is an interesting ‘fortified house’ at the head of U. Griparica, now converted to holiday apartments, with a cannon pointing down the inlet.
