Sobra harbour from NE

The harbour of Sobra lies in a wide bay on the NE coast of the island of Mljet in Croatia, three miles four miles WNW of the harbour of Okuklje. Sobra is the island’s main ferry port, with regular ferries to Dubrovnik and Korcula from the ferry jetty in the NE corner of the bay and a nearby fuel berth. The harbour is not much frequented by yachts, being less attractive than most of the other harbours on the island, but it has a small V-shaped quay off the village in the SW corner of the bay where a yacht can moor bows or stern-to using the anchor if there is space or pick up the mooring lines of one of the restaurants. Shelter on the quay is good in winds from NW round to S but poor in NE and E winds. In fact, with anything E in the wind the quay becomes uncomfortable because of swell.

Navigation

There are no hazards in the immediate approach to Sobra. The lighthouse on the headland on the W side of the bay is a conspicuous landmark, although note if arriving from W that there is a reef 50 metres off it. The headland on the E side of the bay shelters the ferry quay on its S side. The quay of the village is located in the SW corner of the bay, 500 metres SSE of a rocky spit extending from the W side of the bay. Depths in the bay are considerable and only fall to suitable depths for mooring at the quay.

Entrance

Korcula Town or Dubrovnik are the nearest year-round ports of entry.

Berthing

Yacht on Konoba Lanterna quay in Sobra

Yachts visiting Sobra have just three berthing options:

  1. Village quay
The quay at the village at the SW end of the bay has two laid moorings owned by the Konoba Lanterna (identifiable by the umbrellas on the quay). Depths at the moorings are 4.0 - 5.0 metres. Obviously if you use the mooring lines, you must eat in the restaurant. Alternatively, it is possible (though unlikely in view of the numerous moorings buoys) that you may find space to use your anchor to go stern or bows-to the quay. Note that depths are variable along the quay and you must pick your spot carefully. You will be dropping anchor in 10.0 -12.0 metres and the holding is only moderate in sand and shingle, so this option not recommended in unsettled weather. Wifi in the restaurant.
  2. Villa Mungos catwalks
There are two white-painted catwalks off the Villa Mungos restaurant and apartment complex, 300 metres N of the village quay. There are two mooring lines on each catwalk, enabling four yachts to moor up here. Depths at the moorings are 4.0 - 5.0 metres. Again, if you use the mooring lines, you are expected to eat in the restaurant. Electricity and wifi available.
  3. NW anchorage
There is a possible anchorage in the bight in the NW corner of the bay, NE of the large fish farm. Anchor in 8.0 - 10.0 metres, taking a line ashore if possible. Holding is moderate to good in sand and weed. The surroundings are not very attractive in view of the fish farm. Shelter is good in all but strong E or S winds. The rest of the bay is too deep for anchoring.
