Sotogrande is an upscale real estate development with a marina/shipyard. It is convenient, about 1/2 hr ride from Gibraltar, and it is now the nearest yard where one can leave a yacht on the hard near Gibraltar.

The development has a number of restaurants and small food store. Other than that it of no character whatsoever.

The little town of Sotogrande, about 10 min walk from the marina, offers very little.

The marina is located 15 nM from Gibraltar. It is a pleasant enough marina and has a small shipyard.

Communication

The marina responds on VHF channel 09 but not always reliable. They cater to permanent clientele and are not very used to transient yachts. Try calling them on the telephone: +34 956 79 00 00

Navigation

Enter the marina from the south.

Berthing

An attendant will show you and help you to the berth assigned to you.

Facilities

  • Several restaurants
  • Mini-market
  • There is a well-supplied chandlery within the complex
  • ATM
  • Car Rentals (ask at the office)

Repairs

The shipyard has a 150-ton travel-lift. They undertake any repair. Most are done by their own personnel, the rest are sub-contracted.

There is an Englishman sail-maker from Malaga with whom the yard cooperates. Ask at the yard.

Security

24 hr.

Location

Gibraltar is 1/2 drive.

Transportation

There are daily flights from Gibraltar to London and from Malaga to destinations within the EU.

Warning: Spanish taxis are not allowed to enter Gibraltar, you have to cart your luggage from the border to the airport.

Price

It is pricey (€220 for the travel lift and €445/month for hard-standing in 2005). 40 Euro for 14m yacht in March 2015, water and power extra. There was a 120 euro deposit for the power plug attachment.

Personal experience

  • I left my boat on the yard for 3 months in October of 2004. They did all the work I had asked them to do and the boat was ready for launch on the day of my arrival. The marina is very pleasant. --Istioploos 13:34, 21 June 2008 (MDT)
