Patmos (Πάτμος), in addition to being a delightful island with many coves, is one of the most important places of the Christian religion. In the period between 81 and 96 AD St. John wrote the Apocalypse (Revelation) in a grotto not far from Skala, the harbor, now inside the Monastery of the Apocalypse half way up the hill from the harbor. Legend has it that a rock in the harbor used to be a sorcerer named Kynops who came afoul of St. John. In 1088 the Byzantine emperor Alexios Comnenos presented the island to St. Ioannis Theologos monastery which still dominates the island.

The fortified Monastery of St John has one of the most important libraries with many manuscripts including the illuminated Gospel According to St. Mark and the chrysobull signed by Alexios Comnenos granting the island to St. Ioannis Theologos. The people of Patmos are very religious and it seems that at least half of the male population go under the first name of Theologos which means "the theologian."

The harbor, Skala, is an attractive and bustling with activity town. Many cruise ships visit it every day and disgorge hundred of tourists, who are herded into buses for the Monastery. Most of these cruise ships do not stay very long and at night the town is more manageable. The bathing area adjacent to the old commercial harbor is surprisingly clean.

The old town of Patmos is built around the Monastery on top of the hill and has many old houses. All together it is a very nice place to visit although in the summer months it is liable to be very hot.
Navigation
Approaches to Patmos are without problems, although strong gusts will be experienced in the bay leading to the main harbor of Skala during a meltemi. One needs also to watch for the various rocks (above water) that dot the bay, but these mostly are easy to see, especially during the day. A dangerous shoal patch, Ifalos Khelia, with only 0.5 metres of water over it, lies about half a mile due south of Nisos Khelia and needs to be given a wide berth, especially if approaching from the south.

Entrance
There is a customs office on the main quay of Skala, near to the Port Police. I am not sure if Patmos is formally a Port of Entry, but I was able to clear in here successfully in 2011. --Nereus
A transit log will quickly and effortlessly be stamped by the Coast Guard at the cruise ship embarkation/debarkation building.
| text= Skala is a fairly safe harbor during the meltemi season despite the strong gusts and cross-winds. However, it is open to the SE and during the winter months it can become untenable. The yacht berths are towards the head of the inlet, on a half-mile long quay along the west side, north of the town beach which does not appear on recent charts (see satellite view). Update June 2017: the quay shows on the Navionics iPhone app. Depths at quayside are 2.75 metres in the southern end before the bend and 3.8 to 4.25 metres along the remainder to the north end. Update July 2017: Depths at the far end of town quay are 7.7m. There is a Hellenic Electricity building that seems to be using a Diesel Generator and the fumes hang in the air like a bus waiting for passengers. Nazos Supermarket (next door) will give you 12/24 hour Wifi Passes when you buy products. Internet quality is good. The quay closer to the town is reserved for ferries and tripper boats. During strong northerly winds the fetch on the quay can become uncomfortable and you are usually anchor mooring with a cross wind. The holding is mostly good in mud, but in a strong meltemi plough-type anchors can drag, so it is important to check your anchor is secure if leaving the boat in these conditions. There are also several charter fleets operating from Skala, so anchors can and do get tangled. And, in July/August arrive early in Skala to get a place on the town quay, by midday it's full (especially if a Meltemi is on the way). 2017 Prices for 13m yacht €7 p/day (without electric or water). Water approx. €1 per 100 Litres. Electricity is now available and water can be purchased from a truck that comes by frequently. It used to be possible to anchor at the head of the inlet, but since the construction of the new ‘marina’ (see below) this is not really encouraged as the space to swing is now so limited.

In the North end of the inlet a new small "marina" has been constructed, consisting of a substantial concrete jetty and quay with space (theoretically) for around 50 boats if only laid moorings were installed. Depths alongside the north wall >3m and alongside the float >3m at the root and 7m at the end. There are also numerous water and electricity points along both the jetty and quay (but not in service at the time of visit in May 2012). However, the jetty is already almost filled with local boats lying alongside, as there is evidently no management of the "marina" at present. Currently therefore there is only room for around 2/3 yachts at the very end of the jetty and maybe a further 5/6 anchor moored back to the quay. It is not known when or if the marina will be brought into proper service. Moreover, it is a very long way from the town. Update July 2017 - The marina jetty 'black bumpers' will make a mess of your boat and fenders.

There are many restaurants, coffee shops, and stores in Skala and more up in the Chora above. }}
The late 10th century Byzantine Monastery of Saint John, a World Heritage site, is a must. Entry is free, but sensible clothing needs to be worn. The museum contains many treasures from the Monastery’s 900 year history as well as ancient Hellenic and Roman discoveries from the island.

Also visit the Grotto of the Apocalypse, is halfway down between the monastery and Skala. It here that St. John is said to have dictated the book of the Apocalypse to his disciple Prochorus.

It is definitely worth strolling around the old town surrounding the castle of the Monastery. One can visit the Monastery on foot from Skala (about 30-40 minutes) but because of the heat it is best to take a taxi (€6.50 one-way July 2017) or a bus and then walk down hill, visiting on the way the Apocalypse Grotto. Both the Monastery and Apocalypse Grotto open from 0830 – 1330 daily and from 1600 – 1800 on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays only.

In addition to the Monastery of Saint John there many other lesser but very attractive monasteries scattered around the island.

There are many attractive and clean beaches in this fairly low key island.

There are many restaurants, coffee shops, and stores in Skala and more up in the Chora above. }}

Pythagorio (Πυθαγόριο) Harbor, sometimes referred to by the locals by its old name Tigani (frying pan), is the best natural harbor in Samos. It provides all-weather shelter although the outer harbor is open to the SE. One can either moor in the inner harbor or anchor in the outer harbor. In the inner harbor, anchor towards the north end of the quay, avoiding the SW end where most of the day-trip boats moor. Depths are little more than 5.0 metres anywhere in the harbor, so it should not be necessary to lay out any more than 25 metres of chain, since the holding in mud is excellent. If you do, you make it more likely that someone will lay over your chain (because the inner harbor is always very crowded, especially in summer, fouled anchors are common). The outer harbor is very safe with the meltemi, I was there with a force 8 wind without any problems. However, the outer harbor is not safe with E and SE winds. Two anchors are advisable.

Pythagorio Harbor is a port of entry into Greece. Until 1997 there was an attendant who listened on VHF channel 12 and also operated the fuel pump at the W of the harbor. Because the township failed to pay his salary he resigned. During the 1998-9 seasons there was no attendant and the fuel pump is no longer operational. The nearest gas station, is 4 km out of town. For fuel, it is best to go to the Pythagorio Marina, about 1.5 M to the N. At times, there is a strong smell of sewerage in the inner harbor. There are several water outlets on the quay and electrical outlets. For connection to either the water or electricity, see Mr. Nikos, the attendant (he is there 8:00 to 12:00 and 5:00 to 8:00 PM and can be reached by phone at +30 6977 904 922).

The town of Pythagorio, while attractive, is heavily touristic and extremely noisy at night. A disco at the E end of the harbor broadcasts until 2:00 AM. There is a museum and many stores. Most of them will deliver provisions to the quay, if asked. Most of the restaurants are of low quality and overpriced.
Pythagorio is a port of entry into Greece. The Limenarchio (Coast Guard VHF channel 12 or tel. +30 2730 61 225) expects to be informed if you are entering Greece from Turkey.
Berthing
As of 2021 you may no longer anchor inside the bay, allegedly due to complaints related to sewage dumping from cruisers, said the harbour attendant who comes out on his dinghy when he sees someone trying to anchor there. Also “cause of the ferry” he said. This year prices at the harbour have gone up. How convenient... Either way you get to pay for a bad night of sleep due to the loud tourist bars. Super fun. Water and electricity is extra.

If you decide to go ahead and dock at the harbour the attendant will give you a hand. There are moring lines on the west side of the harbour.
Provisioning
* There several grocery stores in town (walking distance) July 2017 - and certainly less expensive than other islands.
* There is a supermarket in the Samos Marina, about 1.5 M to the N
* There is a large supermarket, the Bazaar, on the road between the Vathi and Pythagorio
* There are several smaller stores near the airport towards the town of Chora

Eating out
* Most of the eateries in Pythagorio are overpriced and of low quality (tourist traps).
-- July 2017: Found that most restaurants we visited were inexpensive and excellent quality, certainly better than many Dodecanese Islands visited this year.
* The Maritsa Taverna, up the hill from the western end of the harbour, is better than average (and, most importantly, patronised by the locals).

Transportation
* The airport is about 2 km from Pythagorio. There are daily, and in the summer several per day, flights from Athens and charter flights to Europe
* In the summer there is Hydrofoil service to several of the Dodecanese islands and to Kusadasi
* There are almost daily ferries from Vathi to Piraeus and the Cyclades and a few times a week to the N islands and Thessaloniki
Just out of town is the aqueduct tunnel of Eupalinos, constructed in 524 BC and, along with the original harbor, one of the engineering wonders of the ancient world. * Because of the almost circular shape of the harbor crossed anchors are very common --Istioploos
* We anchored outside the harbour and rented a car for 40 Euro and did a one-day tour of most of the Island except the East end. -
* Whilst Pythagorion is undoubtedly noisy, it has a good feel and atmosphere. The restaurant and shop owners are really attentive to clientele. We found juice/coffee/beer a little more expensive than other islands, but the quality of food in restaurants was generally far superior than many places on our travels between Cyprus and Samos. The Supermarkets are generally less expensive too. Car hire is an exception, we were quoted €50 a day, which eventually negotiated to €40 - far more than we have paid anywhere else. The Habour Master "Diamond" will come to the boat daily to collect €10 (Berth fees including water and electric) irrespective of boat length. And, he is very helpful. --S/Y Speedbird 15:11, 30 July 2017 (BST)
All that for less than it costs to berth at the city owned marinas in Andalusia! The Marina is in a touristy setting which is devoid of charm or authenticity but it does mean that you have easy access to all sort of international food (interestingly enough the tapas offering is lacking but plenty of asian restaurants to chose from weirdly enough). Puerto de la Duquesa is a privately run Marina and it shows. Good security, very kind and amiable staff and well taken care of. It is a medium sized Marina and I am not sure how busy they would be in the high season so calling ahead might be a good idea. The Marina is in a touristy setting which is devoid of charm or authenticity but it does mean that you have easy access to all sort of international food (interestingly enough the Tapas offering is lacking but plenty of asian restaurants to chose from weirdly enough). There is small beach next to the Marina. The "town" itself is about a 10 min stroll away but not much there other than restaurants catering to the tourists near the strand promenade. We didn't explore the town extensively though.
Barbate lies about six miles east of Cape Trafalgar and 23 miles NW of Tarifa. It has been an important fishing port since Roman times. During the Franco era, the town was known as Barbate de Franco in view of the dictator’s fondness for taking regular summer breaks here. Although the town itself is not one of Andalusia’s most picturesque, there are some attractive landscapes around the town, including lushly forested cliffs, long dune-backed beaches and river marshes with important wildlife reserves. The western end of the harbour has been converted into a 314-berth marina, which offers a convenient stop-off point for yachts sailing towards or returning from the Straits of Gibraltar.
Weather
Weather conditions at Barbate are strongly influenced by conditions in the Straits of Gibraltar, although not to the same extent as at Tarifa. Consequently winds are generally less strong here than at Tarifa. However, from Barbate eastwards tidal currents play a significant role in determining sea state, and fresh winds against the current can whip up very unpleasant seas.

Passages
* Barbate to Gibraltar (crossing from the Atlantic to the Mediterranean)

Barbate is a common waiting port for boats crossing into the Med coming from the west. This is considered to be "the easy" direction but is not quite without danger and the waters of the strait should really not be underestimated. Clear and coherent information regarding currents is not that easy to find so hopefully the following information will help those attempting to cross the strait on smaller yachts without a powerful engine which can not get away with sloppy or careless navigation.

In our case, on a 32ft Contessa whose cruising speed under motor is just under 4kts on a good day, just waiting for a no wind day is not an option cause it would take more than 10 hours to make the trip and thus missing the favorable tide window. The strategy which worked for us was waiting in Barbate for a day with a wind forecast of westerlies force 4 to 5 and 6 locally to the east of the strait. We left Barbate 5 hours before HW Gibraltar on what turned out to be fairly light winds (maybe force 3) so motor sailed about 2.5 hours until south of Punta Camarinal which seems to support the fact that the east setting current starts a bit earlier closer to the coast and farther to the northwest around Trafalgar... we estimated to have had somewhere from slack to 0.5 knots in our favour at the beginning. A bit after Camarinal we picked up a bit more current in favor until at some point after Tarifa we were making occasionally 8 knots over the ground(!). After Tarifa wind did pick up as expected but given the strong current in favour and our downwind course it was a fairly nice and swift passage. Even after losing around 1 hour because of some problems with our boom (which meant we had to take down the main completely) we still made it to Gibraltar at the end of our tide window at HW+3 with the last 1.5 hours or so motoring having the wind drop quite a bit due to the shading effect of the bay of Gibraltar.

Traffic in the north inshore traffic zone outside the TSS was limited to other sail yachts so fairly uneventful until one reaches the bay of gibraltar where high speed ferries and container ships demand a sharp lookout and caution.
Navigation
Be aware of the possibility of tunny nets which can extend up to two miles offshore in the approaches. A narrow passage is left at the shore end for vessels entering the harbour. The harbour entrance faces east and is entered along the southern breakwater. Yachts are normally berthed in the outer of the two basins which form the marina on the west side of the harbour, close to the marina office which lies to port on entering the basins. The channel up to the marina is buoyed. A long wavebreak pontoon protects the marina basins from easterly winds.

Berthing
Go to the marina. Alternatively tie up on the arrivals pontoon to port just inside the entrance.

Marinas & Yacht Clubs
* Puerto Deportivo Barbate - has a total of 314 berths. Maximum length 32 metres. Maximum draught 3.4 metres. Yachts normally berth alongside the pontoons in the outer basin, where depths are at least 3.4 metres. Water and electricity on the pontoons. Card access to pontoons. Toilets and showers. Laundrette. Fuel station. Bar and restaurant.

The marina is in an industrial port continuing the theme of so many andalusian marinas.. a bit of a walk to town and not really a "nice" place to hang out. It serves just as a means to a purpose really.

}}
Cadiz is one of the oldest cities in Spain and has been the centre of Spanish naval pride since the 18th century. Originally a Phoenician trading harbour, Cadiz fell into the hands of the Carthaginians in around 500 BC and was the centre for Hannibal’s conquest of the Roman province of Iberia. The city was taken by the Romans in 206 during the last of the so-called Punic Wars between Rome and Carthage. Cadiz was then under Moorish rule from 711 until liberated by Alfonso X of Castile in 1262. The harbour was the main port of call for the Spanish treasure fleets returning from the New World during the 16th and 17th centuries, which earned it the attention of Barbary pirates and - famously - the English privateer Sir Francis Drake, who mounted a successful attack here in 1587 designed to slow the preparations for the Spanish Armada. Most of the city’s buildings today, however, date from Cadiz’s heyday as the capital of Spanish trade with the Americas during the 18th and early 19th centuries. The city’s other main claim to fame is the landmark Spanish Constitution of 1812, declared in Cadiz at the height of the Peninsular War against the forces of Napoleon. Today's visiting yachtsman has a choice of three marinas in the city, all situated on the eastern side of the peninsula on which the old town is built and which is connected to the land at its southern end via a long sandy spit. All the marinas are noisy, either from commercial ship traffic or road traffic, and most yachts generally prefer to berth at Rota, Puerto Sherry or Puerto de Santa Maria and travel into Cadiz for sightseeing. Brief details of the three marinas are, however, given below. Note: there is a fourth small, 100-berth marina at Puerto Sancti Petri off the town of Chiclana de la Frontera 10 miles SSE of Cadiz harbour ( ), but the entrance to the river inlet here is extremely tricky, shallowing to barely 1.5 metres at low water, and should not be attempted without good local knowledge and never with strong winds from any direction.
Tourism
The city of Cadiz is mainly 18th century, with straight, narrow streets overshadowed by houses with wrought iron balconies. The tourist authorities here have painted a red line on the roads to guide tourists round the main sites. These include the cathedral, an impressive edifice with dimensions similar to St Paul’s in London, which has a superb carved stone roof and highly decorative early 18th century choir stalls. The Museo de Cadiz is also worth a visit; its main attraction is two superb Phoenician stone sarcophagi, male and female. The Torre de Tavira, one of Cadiz’s traditional merchants’ houses equipped with watch towers, now houses a camera obscura which reflects a view of the whole city. Finally, the Plaza de San Francisco is a good place for a relaxing lunch stop, surrounded by orange trees.
The Harbour where the Marinas are is on the tip of the peninsula and is rather isolated and far from town. There are no grocery stores at all. Rota would be a better option to buy essentials since the Marina there is in the town itself.
Personal experiences?
* We preferred the river pontoons at Puerto de Santa Maria, from which there are regular ferries into Cadiz, for our visit to Cadiz. It really isn't worth putting up with the noise in the city marinas - even assuming they have space for you --Athene of Lymington 18:49, 13 April 2010 (UTC)

* We were here at the end of October 2011. Note that the marina is a good 15 minutes walk from town, and there is basically nothing at the marina itself, apart from a small bar that is sometimes open. However at this time of year we did not find it noisy. However, passing ships do send some waves into the marina. Staff were helpful and had reasonable English. Figuring out what times shops are open is tricky. Almost always they are open in the mornings from about 9am. Most of them then close at about 1:30 or 2.00pm. Some of them reopen at 2pm or 3pm. these will stay open until 5pm. Others don't reopen until 5pm at which point they then stay open until 8pm or 9pm. Many of the restaurants don't open until 8:30pm or later (at least in October, perhaps earlier in high season) --Life Part 2
Grocery & Supply Stores
The Harbour where the Marinas are is on the tip of the peninsula and is rather isolated and far from town. There are no grocery stores at all. Rota would be a better option to buy essentials since the Marina there is in the town itself.
Internet/WiFi
Not officially available. However with a wifi booster we were able to hook into a free open connection from the Real Club Nautico at a reasonable speed.
* 15 minutes walk into town. Go to the main tourist office (Plaza de Espana) outside which one can then get very cheap regular buses throughout the town. There is also a hop-on hop-off tourist bus for 15 Euro per person. (2011)

Rota is a small resort and harbour situated on the coast of Andalusia 10 miles SSE of Chipiona and 5 miles NNW of Cadiz. Founded by the Phoenicians, the town was later occupied by the Romans and subsequently the Moors until falling into Spanish hands with the expulsion of the Moors in the 13th century. The town’s impressive Castillo de la Luna (now the town hall) dates from this period. Today, Rota is a bustling holiday resort and fishing harbour and also an important Spanish/US naval base. Its harbour, which is shared with the fishing fleet, has a modern, 500-berth marina with all usual facilities.
The marina is in a development complex completely devoid of any character and which could only appeal to the time share crowd. Parts of it look abandoned or as if development stopped perhaps at some point with a downturn in the economy. It is also far from everywhere, nearly two kilometers from the town of Albufeira itself. Albufeira is a big, brash and lively tourist resort which doesn’t appeal to all tastes, although the old town has reportedly a bit more character.
The marina is unfortunately actually quite far from everywhere. The only option to buy groceries nearby is a small convenience store across the street from the marina with very little to offer but some bare necessities and at higher prices since it is the only game around. Albufeira is a purpose-built leisure and marina development 15 miles east of Portimao and seven miles west of Vilamoura in Portugal. The inner basin in which yachts berth is surrounded by rather gaudily painted luxury hotel rooms and apartments, boutiques, bars and restaurants. The development also contains a small boatyard and yacht club (details needed).
The marina is nearly two kilometers from the town of Albufeira itself. Albufeira is a big, brash and lively tourist resort which doesn’t appeal to all tastes, although the old town has reportedly a bit more character.

Grocery & Supply Stores
The marina is unfortunately actually quite far from everywhere. The only option to buy groceries nearby is a small convenience store across the street from the marina with very little to offer but some bare necessities and at higher prices since it is the only game around. The next option is an Intermarche "express" on the way to the town itself or the big supermarkets about 2.5 kms from the marina (Aldi, Lidl)
Portimao is a large resort and popular sailing venue, situated at the mouth of the Arade river on the south coast of Portugal (the Algarve), six miles E of Lagos and 15 miles W of Albufeira. It’s main beach just W of the river entrance, Praia da Rocha, is one of the largest and most celebrated on the Algarve coast. Motor racing enthusiasts are catered for by a motor racing circuit and the waters off the town are busy for much of the year with match racing, windsurfing and power boating events. Visiting yachts have the option of berthing in the huge Marina de Portimao on the W bank of the river or anchoring off the pleasant settlement of Ferragudo on the E bank.
Portimao is situated just east of the long beach of Praia da Rocha - an area with many buildings - and thus the entrance to the river estuary is easily identifiable. The river is entered from due S between two long moles extending from either side of the river banks. The entrance is about 250m wide. Ponta do Altar with its lighthouse of the same name is on the E side. On account of the height of the cliffs on the E side, the entrance to the port is obscured to those approaching from the east almost until the entrance to the moles.

Once the outer moles have been passed, if heading for the marina a course should be set at 020º off the line of the Ferragudo Fore and Aft beacons, leaving buoy no. 2 to port, continuing in the direction of buoy no. 4 until arriving at the marina entrance on port side. The marina is marked by two moles with beacons at each end and the reception pontoon is to starboard of the marina entrance. Reception is the round yellow building at the end of the pontoon, open 8am to 8pm. The fuel station is on the N end of the same pontoon.
Weather
Weather conditions on the Algarve coast are usually more benign than on the west coast and swell is less of a feature.
Navigation

NoteThe Marina de Portimao is very close on the opposite side of the Arade river in the event of a sudden change in the weather
Marine Stores
See Marina de Portimao.

* In the marina are two small chandlers (Ondanautica and Sopramar) plus Bluewater Algarve which is a general fix-it / source-it type business.
* Sorpamar are useless at ordering stuff in. Bluewater, run by Brits, are excellent, and have a good machine shop for fabricating things. --LifePart2
Grocery & Supply Stores
* Small supermarket behind the beach at the south end of the marina
* Big supermarkets (Continent, Pingo Doce) in town
* Continent will deliver to the marina if you spend over 100 Euros. Get there by bus from the Tivoli hotel roundabout just outside the marina, or else dinghy about a mile upstream and dock just outside the museum, from where you can walk to the supermarkets. -- LifePart2

Eateries
Lots of tourist restaurants along Praia do Rocha - a short walk from the marina.

Internet/WiFi
* Wifi in the marina.
* When anchored in the harbor, park yourself as close as you can to the Club Nau beach restaurant at the north end of the beach. With a wifi booster you can then hook into their free wifi at variable speeds - sometimes quite good, most of the time pretty slow, sometimes unusable (update 2016, cannot confirm if this is still available as we used MEO). Personally, I use an unlocked cell phone, with a MEO SIM card, and a pay as you go data connection. Seems to work pretty well. The MEO store is very close to the waterfront in the town center. Tie your dinghy to the seawall ladder and climb up. -- July 2016 LifePart2

Laundry
Behind the marina reception building - 5 or 8 Euros depending on size of load.

Motorbike & Car Rentals
Car rentals available above the beach and in town. About 400 Euros a week.

Garbage Disposal
Lots of bins around the marina, along Praia da Rocha, and throughout the town. No charge.
