Stewart Island (or Rakiura in the Māori language) lies in the Foveaux Strait, 30km south of New Zealand's South Island, and is home to around 400 inhabitants.

Weather
At latitude 47 degrees south (the "Roaring Forties") the weather is often unpredictable, but the climate is surprisingly temperate with summer temperatures climbing to the mid-20's. The average range is between 9°C and 15°C with 1600mm of rain annually.
