For historic details see see Subic Bay in the Wikipedia.

The area that was once the United States Naval Base Subic Bay is now the Subic Bay Freeport Zone. For the Phillipines it is an odd area that seems to be trying to duplicate Singapore as a place safe for foreign business. As such they have made an attempt to exclude the filipino culture to the benefit of multinational corporations. Fortunately for the cruiser more comfortable with filipinos than multinational corporations all the missing culture is a short walk away in Olongapo. The Freeport has several shopping areas with malls, chain stores, franchises, large supermarkets, etc. Some of the supermarkets are stocked with large amounts of food and sundries from the United States.

Neighboring Olongapo is a busy and typical filipino city. It too has malls and all types of shops. Many industrial services are available here that are more oriented to industries other than marine but nonetheless useful to the cruiser.

Approach and Navigation

The harbor can be entered at all hours and all conditions. The charts are reported to be complete and accurate. Many of the charted buoys exist and are lit. The tower and light at Sueste Point is conspicuous. Give all ships and ship facilities wide berth to avoid interactions with the local security agencies.

Check-in facilities (for Customs and Immigration)

There is an Immigration office in downtown Olongapo. They can do visa extensions. Veterans Bank Building, Rizal Avenue Extension, West side between 11th and 14th Streets, Ground floor at the end of a dark passageway.

Port Control is reported to be serious about yachts checking in and out of the harbor. Officially, contact Subic Bay Port Control on VHF 16 when approaching Grande Island. Unofficially, some yachts have the marina contact Port Contol after arrival. Contact at departure as well. Collection of fee varies: reported as either 1200PHP or 2000PHP for each entry or exit.

Berthing Options

Describe here the berthing options of this port. Are there moorings or you have to anchor? Do most boats moor side-to, stern-to, or bow-to? Etc.

Marinas & Yacht Clubs

  • The Subic Bay Yacht Club operates a resort and marina.  Reported (Winter 2013) to be undergoing some kind of management or financial distress but was open for business.
  • Watercraft Ventures Corporation operates a boat yard and small marina frequented by cruisers. Yard is equipped with a Marine Travelift: 70t, length to 70 feet, beam to 18 feet, draft to 17 feet. Contact Spanky Perez (0917) 565 3405 or [email protected]
  • The entrance to the basin containing the Subic Bay Yacht Club and Watercraft Ventures marinas is at 14 49.21N 120 17.47E. Watercraft reported their depth to be more than 3.3 meters (11 feet). Cruiser reports less at the fuel dock.

Anchorages

  • Port Binanga, on the east shore just outside the harbor proper. Well protected. Sandy bottom shoals slowly to the E and N.
  • Gaviota Rock, Barrio Barretto, 014 50.61N 120 15.88E Good anchoring in rocky bottom E and W of Gaviota Rock, which has an abandoned castle upon it. During Blue Rock Bar hours the floating bar makes a convenient dinghy dock. However that end of Bo. Barretto lacks any useful cruiser services other than restaurants, but it a short ride to central Barretto.
  • Arizona Bar, Barrio Barretto. Moorings available. Good access to the retail district of Bo. Barretto. Jeepneys to Olongapo 12PHP 15 minutes. Anchoring in the vicinity is reported to be poor as the soft sand bottom is steep-to. 0.85nm 075d from Gaviota Rock (above).
