Rot Prevention
One preparation technique which is often ignored is the preservation of timbers (including plywoods) from the attack of moulds and other micro-organisms that attack timber and produce 'wet rot'.

Perhaps the best known and most effective method of protecting timber is the application of D.O.T - Disodium Octaborate Tetrahydrate (Na2B8O13-4H2O). This specific compound is often referred to simply as Boron or Borate, but it is only the specific compound of DOT that provides protection from moulds and other micro-organisms that attack timber. Some trade names are Timbor© and Pestbor© .

The product is applied using a brush, roller or spray and while it is best applied to raw timber, it can penetrate through paintwork, especially if the carrier (base liquid) is propylene glycol. It is possible to find the raw powder from chemical suppliers, in which case it can be mixed with either water or propylene glycol (but never ethylene glycol which is poisonous) in a 10 percent proportion (10:1). This treatment is even effective in damp timber, but it works most effectively if you remove as much as possible of the damaged, rotted timber prior to applying DOT.

Once the liquid has dried to the touch, the surface can be overcoated as per usual with paints, epoxy resin or varnish. If a surface residue of white powder appears when dry, this must be wiped off with a damp cloth and the surface allowed to dry again. This is the borate salts coming out of solution and while it is not harmful, it may affect the surface coatings ability to adhere properly to the timber.
